‘Supergirl’ (Season 3): Defeating Supergirl

It has been apparent since the beginning of this season of Supergirl that Kara was going to have to face down her toughest foe yet in the form of Reign, the World Killer – the other Kryptonian (other than Kara’s cousin Superman) who escaped before the planet imploded. It was just a matter of when and how that was going to happen.

While viewers have clearly known that unassuming business woman Samantha Arias is Reign, the World Killer, Samantha has been pretty clueless about her true identity. In last week’s episode, though, Samantha made a trek out into the middle of nowhere, finding her own version of the Fortress of Solitude.

It was during this trip down memory lane that Samantha seemingly was transformed into her true self, but as she woke up at home in her own bed – with her daughter racing into her mom’s room – it was clear that Samantha didn’t even recall going on her “walk-about” [so to speak] let alone anything else about real identity.

The big problem with that revelation is that Samantha – in the guise of Reign – was exacting punishment on those in National City for whom she deemed as those who have fallen to chaos and sin. She had also been leaving her calling card all over the city, burning her emblem into fields, buildings and more. In order to call Reign out, Supergirl left her own emblem burning on the roof of the CatCo building, and that is where their massive battle started.

They battled it out in a high-rise office building – interrupting an office Christmas party to boot – and then skyrocketed onboard a cargo ship before ending up fighting in front of many National City residents (including Jimmy Olsen and Lena Luthor), where Reign got the better of Supergirl, causing her to crash land in a huge heap of concrete, battered and bleeding.

It was clear that Reign defeated Supergirl, and while her sister Alex and the medical team at the DEO worked to save her life, it sure seemed that Supergirl was in dire straits, fighting for her life. Will they be able to save her? Will Mon-El [and his wife – that’s still hard to say – Imra] be able to use something future tech on their ship to help save her life? Will Samantha’s daughter discover the truth about her mom; and for that matter, will Samantha figure out what she really is? Given that Kara told Samantha (and Lena) at the Christmas party at her apartment that she considered them her best friends, how will Kara respond when she learns the truth about Samantha?

Since this is the mid-season finale of the show, what do you think is going to happen next? How do you think Supergirl will survive her “fall from grace?” Will she come back differently after such a harsh beating? Please share your thoughts on the season so far in our comments section below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Supergirl’ will air on The CW on Monday, January 15 at 8/7c.
