‘Killjoys’ (Season 3): Becoming the Wolf

Season 3

The Syfy series Killjoys may have started out as a show about a trio of fun-loving, hard living and kick ass interplanetary bounty hunters [and it is still very much that], but in its third season on the air the trio of Dutch, Johnny and D’avin have been focused on battling the Hullen, a race of humans bonded with an invasive neuroparasite, which were introduced during the latter part of last season.

In fact during last season, it was revealed that not only was Dutch’s adoptive father Khylen one of the Hullen but also Dutch’s scary doppelgänger Aneela was seemingly the leader of this creepy race of super-humans, who have existed for about a thousand years. Needless to say, because they look like normal human beings, and have enhanced abilities – like strength, reflexes and endurance, not to mention rapid healing and a significant decline in the aging process – they are proving to be an incredibly difficult foe to fight let alone defeat.

Since the season premiere this past June, Dutch has been on the warpath against her look-alike Aneela [high praise to actress Hannah John-Kamen for her dual portrayal, by the way!] and her ever-growing vanguard fleet. The situation has been made worse by the fact that the Hullen have infiltrated the RAC – the Reclamation Apprehension Coalition [aka the RAC or The Rack] – the very organization for which Dutch, Johnny and D’avin work as well as the Company, the massive corporation that operates within the Quad – the distant solar system where all the action within this universe takes place – which controls the industry, land and mining rights [as well as many other aspects of commerce] in that world.

With the help of the now deceased Khylen, Dutch, Johnny and D’avin know how to destroy the green plasma, the neurobinder that turns humans into the Hullen, but they need an army of warriors to battle their enemy. Up until this past Friday’s episode, Dutch has been the wolf that was needed to act as the leader of the slowly building army to confront the Hullen, but the torch was inadvertently passed to D’avin [who may have the military background to take over the lead role in this battle but who clearly does not want to] when Dutch took an extreme risk in order to connect herself to Aneela’s memories. And, how about all the reveals we learned from that desperate attempt to gain an advantage over the Hullen, right?!

Sure, D’avin was able to get all the warriors to pledge their people to fight against the Hullen, but what does Dutch’s decision in stepping back from the lead role mean for all of them? Will she continue to disintegrate after experiencing so many of Aneela’s memories? How comfortable will D’avin become in his new, albeit unexpected, role as leader? Is there really any way for them to all take on the Hullen, especially given the intense power for which Aneela displayed two episodes ago? What do you think will happen in the last few episodes that remain in this season? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Killjoys’ will air on Syfy on Friday, August 18 at 8/7c.
