COMIC CON 2017: What’s In Store for Riverdale Season Two

The last panel I attended in Ballroom 20 during Comic Con 2017 was for the Archie Comics- based series Riverdale that debuted last season on The CW.

The panel consisted of a large portion of the cast, including K.J. Apa, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Cole Sprouse, Madelaine Petsch, Ashleigh Murray, Hayley Law, Asha Bromfield and Casey Cott. Joining them onstage were series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and executive producer Sarah Schechter.

Given the very dark direction the show took in its final episodes, especially given [SPOILER ALERT if you’re not caught up with the show, tread lightly!!] that Archie’s dad Fred was shot by a masked robber at Pop’s Chock’lit Shoppe.

Among the season 2 storylines for which the cast and creative minds could share with the packed audience included the following:

• We will see a “dark Archie” next season, according to his portrayer K.J. Apa given what happened to his dad;
• There will be 22 episodes this season compared to the 13 episodes from last season; and according to EP Sarah Schechter it will be “pedal to the medal” in the writer’s room;
• Series creator Roberto shared that “stuff” from season one will be going into the new season. “There will be more Kevin (Casey’s character), more Jose and the Pussycats (Ashleigh, Hayley and Asha) and as much ‘crime stuff’ as we want.”
• Actor Mark Consuelo has been cast as Hiram Lodge, and Camila – who plays his daughter Veronica – shared that it was “effortless” working with him, but she joked that she “doesn’t trust him.”;
• Cole shared that Jughead now he is attending a different school than the rest of his friends, he will be working to fit in and while he thinks that he is doing just that, “he is going to (discover) that it’s not going to be as easy as he thought” to fit in;
• Viewers just might get to see Jughead’s mom and his sister Jelly Bean next season, but “casting will be key,” according to Sarah and Roberto;
• Other new characters who will be introduced in season two include Penny Peabody (aka Snake Charmer), the attorney for the Southside Serpents to be played by Britt Morgan (from True Blood and Supergirl) and Toni Topaz (referred by Roberto as the ‘female Jughead’) to be played by Vanessa Morgan (The Shannara Chronicles and Finding Carter). And, we will get to see Veronica’s ex from New York show up to cause problems for her;
• As shown in the latter part of season one, Cheryl not only tried to kill herself, but she also burned down her ancestral home. According to her portrayer Madelaine, she “gets colder and meaner” in season two;
• Camila shared that the 5th episode of the new season is a big episode for “girl friendship,” as, according to Sarah, it was “important to not have (the girls in the show) fighting (each other), but rather get along.”; and,
• Josie and the Pussycats will get to have a “big musical moment” in the second episode “singing the ‘dopest’ song ever according to the three girls who portray the band; but they wouldn’t (or more to the point couldn’t) elaborate.

The second season of ‘Riverdale’ will air on The CW on Wednesday, October 11 at 8/7c.
