‘Supernatural’ (Season 12): A World Without Demons

Sam and Dean

Imagine if you will… [imagine those memorable words being said in the voice of the late – and legendary – Rod Serling from The Twilight Zone]

That we live in a world without demons…okay, let’s be more specific. Imagine in the world of the long-running series Supernatural that they live in a world without demons.

Sure, we’ve seen both brothers – Sam and Dean – attempt to live a life without hunting…and we’ve seen both of them return to that dark and lonely path of traveling all across the country, fighting all the things that go bump in the night.

But what if there were no demons, no monsters, no ghosts, no jinn, no body swappers – nothing!

Can you envision that?

What do you think Sam and Dean Winchester would have become? For that matter, what would Mary Winchester’s family have been like? What would John Winchester have done if he hadn’t lost his wife to a yellow-eyed demon?

When you really think about all of that, the possibilities are endless.

Dean could have become a mechanic in a small town, getting married to his high school sweetheart, becoming a dad to 3 kids and the owner of two dogs, living the white picket fence kind of life.

As for Sam, he could have completed college, eventually becoming a lawyer. He and Jessica (who died in the exact same manner as Sam and Dean’s mom Mary, at the hand of the yellow-eyed demon) could have gotten married and went on to live a high powered life in New York City or maybe even Beverly Hills, California.

Mary and John Winchester could have grown old together, living a quiet but happy life in Kansas. They could have had a wonderful time being the proud grandparents of Dean’s three kids and the supportive parents to both of their sons.

And then there are the “meat suits” who were possessed by the demons and angels – specifically James “Jimmy” Novak – whose body was taken over by the angel Castiel. If there weren’t any monsters, no need for hunters; there would be no need for angels to come down from heaven; no need for Castiel to take over any human body. What would Jimmy’s life have been like? He could have lived a good life with his wife Amelia, raising their daughter Claire together, allowing their daughter to have a normal life rather than her going down the dark path that she ended up taking.

What about Bobby Singer? He – much like John Winchester – lost his wife to a demon except Bobby’s wife Karen was possessed. How would his life have been different? Perhaps they could have moved on from their fight about having children (the last thing that took place before Karen was possessed); maybe they could have had kids and then grandkids and maybe even great-grandkids. They could have had a long, healthy and happy life together.

But, the world of ‘Supernatural’ doesn’t live without demons and those things that go bump in the night. And I don’t think that fans would want that world to be any other way. What do you have to say?

The next new episode of the 12th season of ‘Supernatural’ will air on The CW on Wednesday, March 2 at 9/8c.
