Jane the Virgin “Chapter Fifty” Review (Season 3, Episode 6)

Chapter Fifty

Last night’s episode of Jane the Virgin was the show’s 50th episode or rather chapter since that is how the show has always been narrated; as if it’s chapters in a book; which is convenient since the primary character is an aspiring author.

The story picked up right where last week left off: with Jane encountering her newly-discovered cousin Catalina on her and Michael’s doorstep – the doorstep of the beautiful new home they had to give up because of the whole mess with Petra (aka Anezka) [but that’s a whole different story to we discussed some other time.]

Catalina and Jane met online thanks to Jane’s research into her family tree after convincing her Abuela to allow her to read all the letters from her long-estranged sister. But why is Catalina really there? Is it for nothing more than to connect with her cousin Jane or is there something a bit more nefarious going on? Given what transpired between Catalina and Abuela – in regards to the battle for the heart of Mateo (Abuela’s Mateo I should say), one has to wonder what is the whole truth behind the sisters’ long-ago sibling rivalry?

But let’s take a moment to discuss the whole Petra and Scott debacle. Now that Petra is really Petra, she ended the relationship that her twin Anezka had formed with the vest-wearing assistant. But he wasn’t going to take that lying down. Nope! He decided to sue her for sexual harassment; and in the end, in true telenovela-style, viewers learned that it was all a con between Scott and Rafael. You see, Rafael told Scott the truth about the whole Anezka-Petra switch and switchback; and Rafael needed to get the hotel back from the conniving Petra. This was their way of getting what they both wanted most, but now Rafael will owe Scott a favor: not a good thing!

Then there was Xo’s plan to open her dance studio. When she couldn’t get a loan at the bank, Rogelio, of course, stepped in to help. He not only found her a fantastic location but also used his celebrity to help her land the lease. But, as it turned out, one of Xo’s old flames – a lawyer by the name of Bruce – had an office next door. At the time Bruce was married, a truth that Xo didn’t learn until after she had gotten involved with him. She was finally going to get her chance to “put Bruce in his place” and while it seemed like she did just that Rogelio caught them kissing at her new studio. A truth that she hid from him and Jane during a family dinner. How do you think that is going to play out in the future?

Now back to Catalina. She had sparks with Rafael and that turned into some hot sex; but as Abuela said to Jane at the end of last night’s episode, she believed Catalina to be a master manipulator just like her grandmother – Abuela’s sister. Is that true? What do you think?

As for other moments in the show: what did you think of Michael singing Bruno Mars to Jane to prove they are not boring? Wasn’t that priceless?! What about the silly product placement in Rogelio’s telenovela? It’s not really that far-fetched anymore in the world of TV, huh? Please share your thoughts about last night’s episode below.

And remember, the next episode of the third season of ‘Jane the Virgin,’ which is actually the show’s mid-season finale, will air on The CW on Monday, November 28 at 9/8c.
