Blindspot “We Fight Death on Thick Lone Waters” Review (Season 2, Episode 7)

Weller Being Held Captive

Last night’s episode of Blindspot opened with the team already knee-deep in the middle of a case, trying to stop Nico Marconi, a notorious arms dealer from stealing something at an important energy summit.

That important something was not a piece of equipment – as first thought – but rather a person: Dr. Mingxia Chen. And what importance did Dr. Chen have to Marconi? She created a tsunami bomb; but rather than sell her technology, Marconi planned to sell the doctor to the highest bidder.

But let’s backtrack a little. It was revealed that Jane and Weller went undercover for this mission, but then they went missing. That mission actually stemmed from kennel tattoos on Jane’s body that led them to – of all places – a “fake” dog adoption ring. Patterson set up fake profiles for all of the team with Jane and Weller getting “chosen” for the mission. This, of course, lead to their disappearance.

Makes your head scratch sometimes, doesn’t it? Viewers of ‘Blindspot’ can always count on dense story-telling in the show, but sometimes it does get a little hard to follow, don’t you agree?

Elsewhere, Zapata came clean with Reade that she took the knife from the police’s evidence lock-up in regards to Coach Jones’s murder. It was only then that she realized that the knife belonged to Reade’s former classmate Freddie; and that Reade didn’t kill the Coach. I have to admit I wonder if Zapata really thought Reade was guilty or not. What do you think?

Then there was the whole reappearance of Assistant US Attorney Weitz, who created problems for Weller and his team before. This time around though (by the end of the episode that is) he was clearly out for Nas’s blood; and nothing she threatened him with will probably stop him. What do you think? It’s my opinion that he wouldn’t have been re-introduced into the storyline without playing some kind of importance in future episodes. But whether we will learn that importance – since next week’s new episode is the fall finale – is hard to tell right now.

In a lighter moment – after the ordeal of the current mission – the whole team gathered together to find out if Weller and Allison are having a baby boy or a baby girl. Admittedly, it was nice to see them all relaxed – for once – and share, albeit briefly, in a bit of good ole levity. It was revealed that they are having a baby girl and it will prove interesting how this storyline will play out over the rest of the season.

But, it was the final scene that will set the stage for next week’s episode. Jane’s brother Roman showed up at her place supposedly unbeknownst to Shepherd to tell her that Phase 2 of Sandstorm’s plan is ready to happen in a few hours. But, is this his way of testing Jane’s loyalty given the message he was given in the last episode or is he really, fully 100% on Jane’s side. Roman is a difficult person to read – at least to me he is – but in this instance I think he is testing her and the results are not going to end well.
