‘Supernatural’ (Season 12): Culture Shock for Mama Winchester

Mama Winchester

In the season finale of Supernatural back in May, viewers discovered that long-gone Mama Winchester was brought back to life by God’s sister Amara. It was her way of repaying Sam and Dean for giving her the one thing she wanted most, and what a gift it was for the Winchester boys.

As the 12th season of the show opened up, Dean and Sam both had to deal with the shock of her return (just the look on both of their faces was priceless; no more so than Sam’s), but what about the shock that Mary Winchester has had to deal with since her “rebirth?”

Not only are her baby boys full grown men – she missed out on all those moments from their childhoods – but also the entire world is so different from her last days. Just look at her reaction to how the internet has changed the world.

But, the one thing that she thought would be the same: hunting. Unfortunately, even that seemed to be beyond her grasp (to a certain extent).

As we clearly saw in last night’s episode, Mary used her honed skills, albeit from her past experiences, to track down information on their current case (who said that old school ways don’t work?) and thanks to her strength (even while being possessed by a psycho ghost), she was able to help Sam and Dean take down said psycho ghost, allowing the spirits of the children whose lives he took to move on.

Not bad for a recently returned soul, huh?

But even though they were able to vanquish another ghost, Mama Winchester needed time away from her boys and the world of hunting to get her bearings. Part of me doesn’t blame her for needing that time alone as there is so much for her to get acquainted with, for her to come to grips with, for her to get used to; but there is a part of me that wants to see more of Mary in upcoming episodes (most of the time the show is just a bit too testosterone-fueled, needing a female touch from time to time) and I want Sam and Dean to have their mother back in their lives.

How is this going to play out? Where will Mary go? How will she support herself? Will she return to Sam and Dean at some point? Will she be a new and improved Mary or something else all-together?

What are your thoughts on Mama Winchester’s return? Were you surprised by her telling the boys that she had to leave? Did you blame Dean for his reaction to her announcement or did you agree with his stand-offish stance? Do you think they are both just going to stand by, waiting for her to return or will they attempt to keep tabs on her? Do you think Dean will ask Castiel to help in surveillance of their mother – just to make sure she is okay?

So many questions! Let’s just hope that the powers that be behind the show give us some answer; and most of all, allow Mary Winchester to come back, ready to take on the things that go bump in the dark, working side-by-side with her boys.

The next new episode of the 12th season of ‘Supernatural’ will air on The CW on Thursday, November 3 at 9/8c.
