Jane the Virgin “Chapter Forty-Six” Review (Season 3, Episode 2)

Chapter Forty-Six

Last night’s Jane the Virgin picked up where the season premiere left off last week with Michael in the hospital – being watched over by his very worried, new wife Jane. While he was eventually going to be all right, Jane was being haunted by dreams of finding him shot in the hallway of the Mirabella. It was going to take both of them time to recover from his shooting: Michael physically and Jane mentally.

Add to that: Jane was also dealing with getting little Mateo into preschool with baby daddy Rafael; and that wasn’t necessarily going well. Rafael may have told Jane that he is finally over his feelings for her – is he really? – but Mateo was acting out, by biting one of his would-be classmates (and even his own mother and Michael as well) and Jane was also biting out in her own way – because of her worries and concerns about Michael returning to work.

Needless to say, there were a lot of up and down emotions in last night’s episode especially Michael when he finally reacted to the fact that he nearly died. His reaction was a little bit knee-jerk after a seemingly inane part of the story – when Mateo bit him and Jane comforted Michael instead of yelling at Mateo. Up until that point Michael had been pretty stoic, working hard to get back to normal (or at least his new normal), but at some point he was going to have to deal with what nearly happened.

Now that he has dealt with it – although I have a feeling that he is going to suffer a little bit of PTSD once he is back on duty (how could he not?) – and has received, for the most part, a pretty clean bill of health from his doctor – he and Jane can finally consummate their marriage. But given what we saw in next week’s clips, they may not get a chance just yet.

Then there was the delicate matter of Xiomara ending her pregnancy. Obviously her devout mother was very upset by her decision while Xo made it very clear to her mother that she neither wanted to be pregnant nor did she want to have a(nother) baby. I’m not going to argue whether Xo or Abuela were right with their individual stance; but I do like that they were able to come to terms with each other and movie on.

On the funnier side of the story was the competition between Rogelio and his arch-nemesis Esteban for crossover success with a three-episode stint on Hawaii Five-0. Rogelio lost out, but that disappointment has set him on a goal. Now whether he reaches that gold ring or not, we’ll have to wait for more episodes to air, won’t we?

And how about Anezka pretending to be Petra, sleeping with Scott to keep him diverting from what she’s trying to do to Rafael only to have Scott tell her that he has all kinds of dirt on Rafael. They are going to be a dangerous combination against Rafael; and I have a bad feeling the ending of the story isn’t going to be good for him.

What do you think? Do you think fake Petra will get caught? Do you think that Jane and Michael will finally get to have sex? Will Rogelio ever get the upper-hand against Esteban? Do you think that Rafael is really over Jane? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Jane the Virgin’ will air on The CW on Monday, October 31 at 9/8c.
