‘Supergirl’ (Season 2): Change Isn’t Easy

Supergirl and Superman

As the second season of Supergirl got underway last week, viewers got to see a new side of the Kryptonian wonder. Not only was she getting a chance to spend time with her superhuman cousin Clark Kent – aka Superman – she was searching for her new career path. Is it any surprise that she chose to be a reporter just like her cousin?

That being said, though, if the result of what happened in last night’s episode is any example, Kara has quite an uphill battle ahead of her. Not only does her new boss – the aptly named Spanner Carr – not think she is a reporter or that she’s cut out for the job or, for that matter, even like her; Kara’s former boss – Cat Grant – is taking a leave of absence from the very company that she created. Oh, and did I mention that her almost boyfriend James Olsen is taking over the reins from Cat, eventually making him Kara’s new boss. That’s not going to be awkward at all, right?

And just as quickly as he arrived in National City, Superman announced to Supergirl that he had to return to his home in Metropolis, to his girlfriend Lois and to his job at the Daily Planet. But before that the super-powered cousins had to fight off the latest big bad: the CADMUS-created kryptonite-filled eko-skeleton-infused fighters, who were nearly able to take down our heroes until they both had valued back-ups on their side in the form of Kara’s sister Alex and DEO-leader Hank (aka J’onn J’onzz aka the Martian Manhunter).

All of that has added up to quite a bit of change for Kara: good, bad or otherwise. As the story plays, that’s hope that she can prove to her new boss that she is a reporter; hopefully she can learn how to work with James as the big boss; hopefully she can learn how to move on without her mentor, Cat Grant, in the same building and hopefully she can learn that she can stand on her own without her cousin right there by her side.

In other areas of interest within the show we’ve seen:

• Winn took a job at the DEO, putting his tech skills to even greater use than at CatCo. especially in created kryptonite-prone body armor that he created for Superman and Supergirl in last night’s episode;
• The arrival of a new Kryptonian in National City. But the big question is: Who is he? He is part of Clark and Kara’s family? Is he good or bad? Given that he woke up at the end of last night’s episode, putting Kara’s throat in a death grip, we will all have to wonder what his intentions are going forward.
• Lex Luthor was mentioned in the season premiere and we learned that he is jail and we also learned that he has an adopted sister living in National City, who is running the family’s company. Will we see more of her in future episodes?
