Jane the Virgin “Chapter Forty-Five” Review (Season 3, Episode 1)

Chapter Forty-Five

The best part of the storytelling in Jane the Virgin is the way the narrator always ties the current story or theme to a story or two from Jane’s past.

That was on great display during last night’s third season premiere where we not only got to see a glimpse into how Jane and Michael became Jane and Michael but we also got to see all the drama that took place after Susanna Barnett aka Sin Rostro aka Rose shot Michael in the hallway of the hotel on his wedding night.

It was quite a rollercoaster ride watching Jane and her family wait and wait and wait in that hospital waiting room to learn Michael’s condition. Watching Jane’s reactions to the news from the doctor was heartbreaking especially given that they were just married not even a full 24-hours earlier; especially her finally breaking down in the waiting room on a different floor.

While the show is meant to be like a telenovela – that was on perfect display last night with the twists and turns in the storytelling – the show is also a family drama filled with laughter, tears and, well, drama. Again: all of those were on full display last night.

Let’s take a look at what happened throughout the episode:

• While the family was waiting for reports on Michael’s condition, we got to see a glimpse into the past when Jane was obsessed with a guy by the name of Sam and how her relationship with Michael developed;
• Rogelio was recognized by two guys in the hospital, who took his picture; but after his disastrous tweets about Mateo being missing, Rogelio wasn’t taking any chances this time around; he made a ridiculous deal with those two guys that landed him in handcuffs by the end of the episode;
• Xiomara came clean with Rogelio about being pregnant, but revealed that she isn’t keeping the baby;
• Jane and Patricia (Michael’s mother) have had a rocky relationship – his parents simply don’t like her – but his shooting finally brought them together and while their relationship may never be great, it will hopefully be better;
• Petra’s identical twin sister Anezka has taken over her identity, using a paralytic to keep Petra incapacitated in the hospital all the while tricking Rafael into believing she is Petra; and,
• Rose has Luisa trapped in what appeared to be a submarine while the cops figured out – thanks to Rafael and powered donuts – that it was Rose in the hallway with Michael and that she’s not dead.

What are your thoughts on the events of the season premiere? Were you on the edge of your seat waiting to learn what happened to Michael and whether he would come through the surgery without being paralyzed or worse? How do you see his recovery playing out in the episodes to come? How much trouble will Rogelio be in this time around? Will Rafael figure out what is going on with fake Petra? Will the real Petra continue to be trapped at the hospital? Will Jane finally get to have her wedding night and lose her virginity? What do you think? Please share below.

The next new episode of ‘Jane the Virgin’ – now in its third season – will air on The CW on Monday, October 24 at 9/8c.
