POLL: How Are You Surviving the Current Walking Dead Hiatus?

Negan - The Walking Dead

There is nothing new or unique about a hiatus on TV. As hiatuses go, the one between seasons six and seven of The Walking Dead is not even that long. And, there is also nothing new about a cliffhanger ending to a season or mid-season of a TV show. But, and this is a huge but, the nature of the cliffhanger at the end of season six of The Walking Dead is so gargantuan that it is understandable that fans are reacting very strongly and utilizing different coping strategies as we wait for season seven to begin.

As a slight aside regarding cliffhangers, consider that for instance when Captain Picard was turned into a Borg and Commander Riker ordered the Enterprise to fire on the Borg cube under Picard’s control at the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s third season; that was a fearsome cliffhanger. But, we all knew that Picard would survive; the real cliffhanger was how they would get out of their sticky situation. This is so far from the situation in the final episode of season six of The Walking Dead as to be in another universe! Someone died. A beloved character died. And we have had months to stew about it.

While I am not going to speculate about who has died – there are ample places on the net to find those discussions – I would like to explore the different ways fans are coping with this particularly excruciating hiatus.

Ignorance is Bliss

Yvette Nicole Brown - Talking Dead

On the season seven preview episode of The Talking Dead which aired Sunday, August 14, 2016, one of the guests was Yvette Nicole Brown, actress, and The Walking Dead Super Fan. When the question of who died came up, she basically said that she was not thinking about it. In her mind, everyone is continuing to live on and she will deal with the death when it happens on the season premiere October 23.

Are you in her camp? Are you totally avoiding thinking about it for now? After all, October will be here soon enough, and even Jeffrey Dean Morgan said recently that once the new season premieres you would likely rather go back to the hiatus!

Information Overload

Maggie, Rick, Carl - The Walking Dead

Maybe you are the type of fan who likes to read every single article that comes out. Have you been poring over the many articles speculating on who was killed, and analyzing the sight lines from Negan’s point-of-view as well as the victim’s point-of-view?

I will admit that I have scanned through these articles but none of them seem truly definitive. Yet, that does not stop folks from writing them and does not stop me from reading them.

Chatting, Chatting, Chatting!

Abraham and Sasha - The Walking Dead

Thanks to the internet and other social media, fans can chat all they want about The Walking Dead and other programs. Have you been taking part in the lively discussions about who died?

In your chats have you offered suggestions about who you wish had died or who you think should have died? Many fans have strong opinions about who they want to see go, as well of who they want to see stay!

Fan Fiction

Rick and Michonne - The Walking Dead

Are you into fan fiction? Perhaps you are writing your own alternate ending to season six, one where no favorite character dies. Or perhaps you killed off your least favorite character.

If you don’t write fan fiction, do you read it? This is a good way to while away the hours as we wait for the end of October to get here.

Watching Other Zombie Programming

Madison, Travis, Victor - Fear the Walking Dead

AMC has been showing marathons of each season of The Walking Dead on consecutive Sundays. Have you been watching those?

Also, the second half of season two of Fear the Walking dead just premiered last night, so that can help satisfy a hankering for walkers.

And, as another alternative, EPIX has been showing The Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. Sadly, iZombie on the CW and Z Nation on Syfy are not currently running new episodes!

I’ll Take the Combo

Carol and Carl - The Walking Dead

Maybe you are a multi-tasker and have tackled more than one way to survive the hiatus? If so, bravo!
