Dark Matter “We Should Have Seen This Coming” Review (Season 2, Episode 6)

We Should Have Seen This Coming

Does everyone remember the scene in the classic Christmas movie Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer where it features the Island of Misfit Toys? Well, last night’s episode of Dark Matter made me think of that moment specifically when Five mentioned they are a bunch of misfits on the Raza. It made me think of them as members of “The Raza Ship of Misfits Criminals.”

They have been an unusual group of people on the Raza since the very beginning, waking up from their stasis (a long winter’s nap?) with no memories of who they were. They quickly became a team (just like Santa’s reindeer? – well maybe not, but…) of misfits, slowly learning the truths about themselves and, for the most part, attempting to be better than their previous selves.

As for the new “inhabitants” of the Raza – namely Devin and Nyx – it was time to learn a bit more about Nyx especially her uncanny abilities. For several weeks now viewers have been surmising that she either has nanites in her body much like Two OR perhaps she had some kind of sixth sense.

Well, last night’s episode confirmed that she does have a sort of sixth sense, but it’s much more than just that. It was explained that she – and her brother Milo – as well about a 100 other people from her village were taken by a less than benevolent group, who experimented on them, using their already inherent “gifts” – creating a hive-like group where they can not only see but also predict future outcomes. Quite a talent to have, but in the wrong hands – which seemed to be the case for Milo, Nyx (who escaped from them via a flashback) and the other kidnapped villagers – could be quite dangerous.

Let’s not forget the reason behind the Raza crew finding Milo: Nyx told Two about a ship where they could “acquire” Shadow – a synthetic hallucinogen – that they could basically sell on the black market to get much needed funds. Since the Raza needed repairs and they needed supplies, it seemed like an easy in-and-out mission, until Nyx led Two to her brother. That was when all their troubles started, as the “Seer Group” – the people on the other ship – were none too happy about Milo or their drugs being taken. Well, they weren’t so upset about the drugs being taken but they were really pissed about Milo, as he was their lynchpin.

In a roundabout way, though, it was because of Milo that the Raza team – specifically Three and Six – mended fences (well as best these two Alpha males could under the circumstances), but the end was bittersweet as Milo took his own life rather than allow the “Seer Group” to keep him – although his returning to them saved his sister and the Raza crew. It was heartbreaking to see the tears roll down Nyx’s face as she knew what was going to happen to her brother beforehand.

And what about Two’s hand spasm? Given that she has those miraculous nanites coursing through her body this cannot be good? Are the nanites wearing down? Is that even possible? What could be causing this problem? And, we still don’t know exactly what is wrong with Devin, as he keeps “juicing” himself up, but for what purpose? What do you think is going on with both of them? Please share your comments on last night’s episode below.

And remember, the next new episode of the second season of ‘Dark Matter’ will air on Syfy on Friday, August 12 at 10/9c.
