Comic Con 2016 Report: Prison Break

Prison Break 2017

On the last day of Comic Con this past Sunday, a moderated panel was held in Hall H for the much-anticipated yet rather unexpected return of the FOX drama Prison Break, which will return for a 10-episode 5th season next spring.

The cast members who participated in the panel included Wentworth Miller (Michael Scofield), Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows), Sarah Wayne Callies (Sara Tancredi) and Robert Knepper (Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell). They were joined by executive producers Vaun Wilmott and Michael Horowitz.

As expected, Wentworth was asked how the show came to return to FOX seven years after it went off the air. He shared that when he and Dominic were cast in The Flash as Captain Cold and Heatwave (respectively) [and then eventually segwayed onto the new show DC’s Legends of Tomorrow], the subject of Prison Break naturally came up in their conversations. And once they started talking about the show, they both became interested in returning to that world and, as you can imagine, the networks were soon interested and the ‘dominos fell into place.’

Throughout the panel the cast reminisced about what it was like working with each other and were specifically asked if they could share their first impression of each other.

• Robert said that Sarah “was one of the greatest actors I’ve worked with”; Dom “loved to pick on me” and Wentworth always “took care of me.”
• Sarah joked that “Dominic growled at me (the first time we met)”; she then told a story about going to dinner with Wentworth – so they could get to know each other better. “We were in Chicago…and it was cold…and (I remember we saw) a political sign for Barack Obama and [jokingly] we thought that would never happen”; and about Robert she remembers “watching him work.”
• Dominic shared that Robert was “unique (but) really odd; he was the first actor I worked with and he was really into method; I was impressed by his commitment”; Sarah was “tough as shit”; and Wentworth was “very private… a (real) gentleman… gentle and sincere and I thought he was the most beautiful man of Earth.”
• Wentworth said that Robert “had quality in spades, (my first impression) was one of awe and appreciation”; he said that he never doubted Sarah’s “quality of work for a moment…(it was refreshing) not working with (all) dudes)”; and when he did a chemistry read with Dominic he joked that “we both shaved heads in common and I knew we were in.”

It should be noted that Michael will, once again, have tattoos on his body [not as many as the debut season) that are “essential to the plot” according to Wentworth and the executive producers, but they didn’t elaborate on any spoilers except for what was featured in several sneak peek videos screened during the panel.

Since it has already been released, though, fans of the show should be aware that returning cast members will include Amaury Nolasco (Fernando Sucre), Rockmond Dunbar (Benjamin “C-Note” Franklin) and Paul Adelstein (Paul Kellerman); and Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) will join the cast as Scott Ness, Sara’s current husband. [Reminder: Everyone thought Michael died in the series finale, but they soon learn that was all a lie.]

‘Prison Break’ will return to FOX sometime in spring 2017.
