Comic Con 2016 Report: Once Upon a Time

Once Upon a Time

The third day of Comic Con 2016 started off with a panel focusing on the fairytale ABC drama Once Upon a Time, featuring cast members Colin O’Donoghue, Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, Josh Dallas, Emilie de Ravin, Rebecca Mader and Jared Gilmore as well as executive producers and series creator Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis.

The panel opened with a very cool trailer focusing on the Evil Queen and her alter ego Regina Mills, the former who will be wreaking havoc on the residents of Storybrooke in the show’s upcoming sixth season.

The first question, however was directed toward Emilie, who was asked what is the draw to Rumple for Belle; and she answered that “she likes the bad boy,” but she does see the good in him too.”

Then the conversation was reverted back to Lana about how complete is the split between the Evil Queen and Regina with Lana sharing that “Regina is still sassy…she’s not gonna lose that…but the Evil Queen is now without a conscious, she’s pure evil.”

Each of the actors were then asked about the journey each of their characters have taken over the past season:

• Josh shared that Charming having to deal with James in the Underworld reminded “him of everything he wants to avoid” being;

• Jared shared that Henry finally “found his place as part of the heroes and he likes it”; and,

• Rebecca shared that becoming a mom has changed Zelena, “being loved, being a sister…a lot happened (to her) all at once…(receiving) unconditional love that she didn’t think she deserved” changed her.

Jennifer and Colin were then asked about the final scene of season five between Emma and Captain Hook that featured a wedding dress in a shop window, but Jennifer didn’t recall it being there while Colin cleared up the confusion by saying it had always been there. In fact, Eddy joked that Emma’s wedding dress would actually be red leather.

Much like in years past a special video was written and created just for Comic Con, featuring Victoria Smurfit in her OUAT role of Cruella De Vil and Buffy alum James Marsters as one of King Arthur’s men of the roundtable inside the bar in the Underworld. The episode was written by Jane Espenson, which led Adam and Eddy to give a shout-out to the writers who were in the audience.

As the panel came to a close after some interesting audience questions, the moderator – Yvette Nicole Brown of Community fame – mentioned that this fall fashions from Once Upon a Time will be available at Hot Topic; and then a sneak peek of the first scene of the sixth season premiere was screened, featuring the new characters of Aladdin (Deniz Akdeniz from the Australian film Tomorrow When the War Began) and Jafar (Oded Fehr from Covert Affairs and The Mummy movies).

‘Once Upon a Time’ will return to ABC for its sixth season on September 25 at 8/7c.
