The Fosters “Now for Then” Review (Season 4, Episode 4)

The Fosters Season 3

It was yet another relatively calm episode of The Fosters on Freeform last night; but there was still plenty of drama to go around.

Let’s take a look at what happened:

• Lena and Stef were celebrating their one year wedding anniversary – congrats to them! Although, as Stef stated, that shouldn’t negate their 10 years of being a couple;

• Brandon’s girlfriend Cortney was finally getting a “free” weekend (i.e., her ex was taking little Mason for the weekend) so what did they decide to do: have a party [what else?!];

• Callie’s boyfriend AJ is now going to Anchor Beach because some kids were pulled out of the school by their parents due to that scary lockdown;

• Lena was really worried about losing her job because of Gabe (Jesus and Mariana’s biological dad) being hired to do the set construction for Brandon’s Romeo & Juliet senior project [after all he is a registered sex offender];

• Ana and Mike were hitting a rough patch because of her backsliding after seeing Gabe for the first time in over 16 years;

• Callie was working on her new senior project (hopefully this one sticks since it’s her third attempt) – with AJ in tow – taking pictures of the former foster homes where she and younger brother Jude lived until the found the Adams-Foster family; and,

• Mariana decided that she wanted to see Nick – who is now in a secure facility where he is getting treatment – because she believed it would finally help her feel safe.

Now let’s examine how the stories played out:

It would seem that due to the events at the school and at home with Nick, Mariana has been sharing the bed with her moms for quite some time; and while her moms are worried about her, they wanted to give her time to come to terms with what happened. She finally came to terms and wanting to see Nick – specifically to tell him the truth (that she isn’t his girlfriend anymore), but that didn’t quite go as I’m sure she thought it would.

Cortney’s “free” weekend fizzled not only because the party she and Brandon planned was pretty lame but also by the fact that she was served papers from her ex who wants full custody of their son Mason.

Callie was hurt by the words of one of her former foster mother’s (the mom of the guy who raped her) because that mom blamed Callie for everything that happened to her family. [What a witch, right?] and then she learned about what happened to one of the other foster kids that she knew during her tumultuous seven years in the foster care system. Super Callie to the rescue, huh?

And, thanks to a major financial assist from Lena and Stef, Gabe was able – with some help from an attorney, a good word from – of all people – Mike and the ADA – to get off the sex offender registry AND – if all goes well – hopefully stop any recourse by Anchor Beach against Lena’s job.

What did you think of last night’s episode? Do you think Mariana will be able to tell Nick the truth and what kind of reaction will he have when she does? What more do you think Callie is going to do to help her former foster brother? How long do you think Brandon is going to stay with Cortney? Do you think we’ll see anything more of Gabe now – especially in Jesus and Mariana’s lives? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

The next new episode of the fourth season of ‘The Fosters’ will air on FreeForm on Monday, July 25 at 8/7c.
