‘Once Upon a Time’ (Season 5): How It All Ends (For Now)

Evil Queen

For five seasons, viewers of the ABC fairytale drama Once Upon a Time have seen the myriad of characters from many of those stories deal not only with the curse that trapped them within the fictional village of Storybrooke but also eventually found them traveling to the worlds of the Enchanted Forest, Wonderland, Neverland, the Land of Oz, Arendelle, Camelot, the Underworld and now – in Sunday night’s season finale – the Land of Untold Stories.

The main characters that we have come to know all too well over those five seasons have faced many foes and also made many friends along the way. The main characters have grown and changed, have fallen in and out of love, waged battles against foes and former friends (or lovers) and triumphed over evil.

The fifth season of the show has found the characters doing much the same as in the past, dealing with Emma becoming the Dark One, working to bring Emma back from that path, losing Hook to the Underworld and the “team” going literally to hell and back (so to speak) to save him and help others trapped in that “world” to move on.

As the finale played out, Henry and his friend Violet (from the world of Camelot) traveled to New York City in the hopes of finally ridding the world of magic in order for all of them to finally be happy [he was convinced that magic always got in the way of their happily ever after].

But, of course, Mr. Gold had other plans. (More on that shortly.)

While magic was being pulled into the “real” world, several of the main characters (Zelena, David, Snow and Hook) were thrust into the Land of Untold Stories [after Zelena helped all of the people from Camelot return to their own land] where they encountered Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

It was the latter who – with help from Mr. Gold, of course – in the final scene made it known to Regina and Henry that he now owns Storybrooke – all part of the deal Mr. Hyde made with Mr. Gold in order for him to get Belle and his unborn child out of Pandora’s Box and awoken from the sleeping curse. What kind of havoc will that wreak on Storybrooke?

Elsewhere, Regina believed that she finally rid herself of her evil side: the Evil Queen. But in the final scene we saw that was not the case. The inhabitants of Storybrooke, and more specifically Regina, are not going to be happy when that revelation is made; and only the Evil Queen knows what she has in store for them.

What are your thoughts on the fifth season of the show? Did you have any storylines that you liked or disliked? Were you happy to finally see Hook and Emma as a couple? Were you upset by the loss of Robin (even if he sacrificed himself to save Regina)? Were you surprised to learn that Violet’s father was the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court? Will Zelena remain good? What horrible events are going to transpire with Mr. Hyde in control of Storybrooke? And, worse yet, what do you think the Evil Queen will do next? Please share your thoughts about the fifth season of ‘Once Upon a Time” and what you think will happen next season in our comments section below.

‘Once Upon a Time’ was renewed by ABC in March for a sixth season. The official airdate has yet to be announced.
