POLL: How Do You Feel About The Flash’s Walk on the Dark Side?

Cisco, Barry, Oliver, young Hunter - The Flash

Spoiler alert – Along with other things, I will be discussing very recent events on The Flash. If you have not up to date with your viewing you might want to bookmark this article and come back later.

One of the most obvious and for me appealing aspects of The Flash is that it has an upbeat tone. Oh, sure, there is plenty of danger. After all, it is an action adventure Superhero show. There has to be danger. There have to be battles! But, unlike the show that spawned it, The Flash really does have a pretty light feel, with the good guys winning regularly and everyone being mostly happy. I wrote about this last year in The Flash – The Lighter Side of Crime Fighting, and my feelings on the subject have not changed. However, in episode 18 of season two, which aired April 19 and was entitled “Versus Zoom,” we experienced a decidedly dark tone.

I decided to see what you, the readers, think about this different direction. Do you like it, dislike it, or something in between? Let’s take a look at the options for voting!

I’m OK with the Dark Tone

young Hunter Zolomon - The Flash

In my opinion, the trend today is to make Superhero TV programs and movies dark. By that I mean several things. The settings are physically dark, the characters are emotionally somber, and the circumstances are many times brutal.

Consider the opening sequence of “Versus Zoom,” where we see part of the origin story of Hunter Zolomon, aka Zoom. He witnesses his father physically abuse his mother, then kill her, while forcing him to watch. That is very sinister material for The Flash.

But, perhaps you consider that to be appropriate for a show about a man who fights crime. After all, to have a good hero, you need dastardly villains! Knowing the story of how Hunter became a serial killer is critical to understanding the lengths he will go to satisfy his need for violence. From that point of view, you can certainly justify the depiction of those events.

No Way, Bring Back the Light Tone!

The Flash "Family of Rogues" Season 2 Episode 3 (12)

The Flash, and now CBS’s Supergirl seem to be the exception to the rule for Superhero programs. Both show the brighter side of “Superheroness” (can I claim creation of that word?) with an upbeat sensibility and style. As I said previously, that does not mean people do not die, and everything is always fun and games. Sad events do occur, but in general, characters on the show are optimistic.

Barry Allen really sets the tone for The Flash, and epitomizes the positive traits of human beings. He is selfless, caring, loyal, and a seeker of justice. Really, I do not think many people would argue that those characteristics are the building blocks of a real Superhero as well as one swell guy. Who else would like to be Barry’s friend?

It’s OK If It Is Just Temporary

The Flash Episode 8 FLASH VS ARROW 09

No show can sustain a totally positive or totally negative outlook, although I sometimes think Arrow is taking a run at the latter goal. Having some gloomy and some airy episodes makes for a good mix, but the dark stuff may not be preferable as a steady diet.

An episode or two having a somber tone does create a stark contrast to the more positive episodes, which can be an advantage. This can make either the ominous or the lighthearted episodes more enjoyable especially if use sparingly! After all, variety is the spice of life.

Give Me a Fourth Choice!

I think it will come as no surprise that I prefer the lighter side of crime fighting when it comes to The Flash. I watch plenty of dark shows like Arrow and Supernatural, and it is nice to know that I can balance that out with The Flash and his upbeat persona!

How about you? Please vote and then tell me what you voted for and why in the comments section below. I very much look forward to reading your thoughts.
