Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 3): A Salute to Bobbi and Hunter

Parting Shots

Lance Hunter was introduced in the second season premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. back in September of 2014 while his ex-wife Barbara “Bobbi” Morse (aka Mockingbird) came along four episodes later.

Hunter originally worked for S.T.R.I.K.E. (Special Tactical Reserve for International Key Emergencies), the British counterpart to S.H.I.E.L.D., until he was hired by Phil Coulson to become a mercenary.

A trained special agent, Hunter is skilled in infiltration and in marksmanship; and he is willing and able to carry out assassinations when necessary.

During his time with S.H.I.E.L.D. he participated in many field missions, staying loyal to Coulson even during the war within the agency led by Robert Gonzales. He later saved Bobbi’s life when she was kidnapped and nearly killed by Grant Ward and Kara Palamas.

It was because of this terrible incident that Hunter became focused on killing Ward in revenge, but regretfully that mission failed. Hunter then refocused his efforts in defeating Gideon Malick’s plans for a reinvigorated HYDRA.

When Bobbi was first introduced on the show, it seemed she was working for HYDRA, but that was all a deep undercover mission, allowing her to work from the inside in an attempt to bring them down. While that wasn’t the outcome, Bobbi was able to rescue Jemma Simmons, who was also undercover within HYDRA.

For a short time she sided with Gonzales, which led to the brief internal war within S.H.I.E.L.D., but once both sides managed to put aside their differences in order to work against HYDRA, Bobbi went to work for Coulson under the newly reunified organization.

Nearly being killed by Ward and Palamas, Bobbi briefly considered “giving it all up”, but once she healed from her extensive injuries, she returned to active field duty.

Bobbi is a highly skilled operative being a master at martial arts and is always seen with her battle staves. She is not only a multi-linguist, but also an expert interrogator, an expert scientist, an expert acrobat, an expert marksman as well as a pilot.

How’s that for mad skills?!

It was in last week’s episode that Bobbi and Hunter made the ultimate sacrifice, though. No, they didn’t sacrifice their lives, but they took the fall in order to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. alive even when no one else fully believes that the agency exists anymore.

Perhaps one of the most tender moments out of the show’s three-year history was the “spy’s goodbye” extended to Bobbi and Hunter in the bar by their fellow, former team members. Those few moments of goodbye were moving and gripping, bringing a tear to the audiences’ eyes and to most of the team, even Mack.

How did you feel about Bobbi and Hunter taking the fall for S.H.I.E.L.D.? Do you think they did the right thing? Were you moved by the spy’s goodbye scene? Are you waiting in anticipation for Marvel’s Most Wanted – the spin-off pilot that will feature Hunter and Bobbi as the leads – to get picked up? Please share your overall thoughts on our disavowed spies below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ will air on Tuesday, April 5 on ABC at 9/8c.
