WonderCon 2016 Report: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

SHIELD

Much like the panel for ‘Scorpion,’ the WonderCon 2016 panel for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which was held this past Saturday afternoon at the LA Convention, had to be fast-paced because the audience was treated to a sneak peek at tonight’s new episode that found the team dealing with the aftermath of Bobbi and Hunter leaving the team (taking a bullet to save the team in essence).

The panelists included cast members Luke Mitchell (Lincoln Campbell), Henry Simmons (Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie), Elizabeth Henstridge (Jemma Simmons), Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May), Brett Dalton (Grant Ward), Chloe Bennet (Daisy Johnson) and Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) as well as executive producer Jeff Bell and Jeph Loeb, who acted as moderator.

It should also be noted that they left an empty seat on stage in honor of Bobbi and Hunter – that salute got a very positive response from the audience, by the way.

Given all the attention that the characters of Bobbi and Hunter received, Jeph asked Jeff to talk about ‘Marvel’s Most Wanted’ – the new ABC series that will feature them – and he joked “I’m authorized to do that?” Once consent was given (Jeph is Head of Television at Marvel after all), Jeff simply shared that this new show will about Bobbi and Hunter “outside of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The conversation couldn’t end there, though, given the emotional parting scene at the bar between all of the SHIELD members. Clark shared that the scene “was a beautifully written episode and such a beautifully written scene.” And if the response by the audience was an indication, the fans/viewers agreed!

Each cast member was then asked a specific question about their characters:

Luke and Chloe (about the relationship between Lincoln and Daisy) – They like to pull pranks on each other in terms of what awful things they can claim they are going to eat before they have a kissing scene;

Elizabeth (about what Iain De Caestecker, who plays Leo Fitz would say about her if he were able to participate in the panel) – He would say “how much he loves me.”;

Ming-Na (about how the men in her life turn into giant monsters) – She joked “I have that effect on men.”;

Brett (on what it’s like going to work each day) – He ribbed that “You never know what you’re gonna get.” [there were several instances where fun was made of the scene of his character dripping in honey!]; and,

Henry (on the emotional parting scene with Bobbi and Hunter) – He didn’t have to say anything because the rest of the cast said they all “lost it” because of his acting in that scene (much like, I’m sure, did those who watched the episode).

There were a lot of audience questions, including a cosplayer dressed as Grant Ward who gave Brett a hard time (jokingly, of course) and a sweet little girl who was very overcome by getting to ask a question of the cast. This turned into a memorable moment as the little girl was invited on stage with the cast. She asked her question sitting right next to Clark Gregg and walking off stage with the entire cast.

The next new episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air tonight on ABC at 9/8c.
