The Fosters “Sixteen” Review (Season 3, Episode 17)

The Fosters Season 3

appy Birthday Mariana and Jesus!!

Last night’s episode of The Fosters primarily focused on the sixteenth birthday of twins Mariana and Jesus, but it was also heavily laced with frank sex talk between the siblings (awkward though most of it was).

First, Jesus intercepted a cell phone sexting picture from Connor to Jude that was completely meant for Jude’s eye only. The big problem with that, of course, was that Jude wasn’t ready – at all – for what he saw. And, quite frankly, I don’t blame him. Not every teenager needs to lose their virginity to the first “love” they have nor should any teen feel pressure to “perform” simply because that’s “what everyone else does.”

Then there is the sexual tension that continues to last between Callie and Brandon even though they are both trying to move forward with other “partners”. It’s clear that AJ wants to have a closer relationship with Callie while Brandon really seems intent on getting Callie “out of his system” by making the move on Cortney.

It may be too soon to determine if either of them will be able to move forward until the consequences of what they did (having sex when they thought for sure Callie would never be adopted by the Adams-Foster family) comes to light. And when (not if) the truth is revealed, Callie and Brandon are going to have to deal with a lot more than a broken heart.

Elsewhere, Mariana and Jesus both have very different ideas for their upcoming 16th birthday parties. Jesus just wants something small with a handful of friends where they can skateboard; but, of course, Mariana wants a big celebration. Enter Nick who somehow makes both parties possible – in his dad’s warehouse that will be used in the near future for Brandon’s and Mat’s Romeo & Juliet rock opera. I just have to wonder where did all that money come from for Nick to make both parties possible. And does his dad REALLY own that warehouse? If I were Stef or Lena, I would want to know a lot more about Nick’s parents. Why hasn’t Stef looked into Nick’s parents given her track record?

Here are some of the questions I have about this episode:

• Why did Ana give in to the lure of alcohol (or drugs) while catching up with Gabe?
• Do you think Connor was right in thinking that (maybe) Jude wants to break up?
• Will Callie be able to keep AJ in the dark about her recent past with Brandon? Especially given that Brandon came clean with Cortney.
• Will Sally come clean to her parents about her kissing Monte (and not the other way around as she claimed)?
• Will Ana’s parents provide the letter of support to get Gabe off the sex offenders registry?
