The Fosters “Mixed Messages” Review (Season 3, Episode 12)

The Fosters Season 3

“Do you have any idea what it’s like to get over someone when you have to see them every day?”

Ironic words to be said by Mat to Brandon on The Fosters, don’t you think?

He and Callie had their little love affair when they both thought for sure she was never going to be adopted. And we all know how that turned out. Not good…well, Callie got adopted (that was good) but not good for the two love birds.

Much like the title of this episode there were a number of mixed messages throughout the episode, starting with Callie trying to figure out who thought she had sex with her foster brother – did they mean Liam, who actually raped her (but didn’t get convicted of the crime) or Brandon; Sharon trying to convince her daughter Stef to get the mastectomy after the stunning news of her stage 0 cancer diagnosis, Brandon making Callie feel about her “going out and shine” or even the mixed messages contained within Shakespeare’s work that is confusing Jude.

Then there is the silly mixed message of Brandon trying to get a date with new co-worker Cortney during his first surfing lesson with her; the ridiculous cat fight between Marianna and Lexi while they were debating each other for Junior Class President, having their past discretions used against the other and the awkward photo shoot for Callie where she agreed to wear an outfit picked out by Justina that really “isn’t her”.

Just like every other episode, last night’s had a lot of story – some of it mindless (or more to the point needless) and some of it progressed the ongoing stories along. We saw Brandon try to move forward with his life, we saw Marianna and Lexi come to better terms with each other, Stef admit her condition to Mike and make a decision about her diagnosis and Jesus being reckless once again.

The story focusing on AJ and Ty seems to be in a holding pattern – right now – given that they both missed their grandmother’s funeral; but I can’t see Stef letting it go any time soon because of Ty’s involvement in the car accident that involved Jesus, Marianna and their biological mom Ana.

How about the senior project that Brandon wants to work on with Mat – a rock opera based on Romeo and Juliet. Will this really help both of them move on? Or do you think this will come back to haunt them in some way. The whole idea wouldn’t be brought up if it didn’t have some ultimate end game, right?

What do you think about Stef’s decision and the latest news she received from the doctors? Do you think she will come clean with Lena about the new diagnosis? Do you think Jesus will ever get his act together? Will we see more of Nick or was that a one-time “thing”? Where do you think AJ and Ty have gone? Do you think that Stef will track down the runaway brothers? Any more thoughts on just what Justina is up to with Callie?

The next episode of the third season of ‘The Fosters’ will air on FreeForm on Monday, February 8 at 8/7c.
