‘Supergirl’ (Season 1): Family Matters

Astra

Family has always been very important to Kara Zor-El, especially given the fact that she was sent to Earth from her home planet of Krypton by her parents, who died – along with all the other inhabitants of that doomed planet – not that long after the birth of her cousin.

When she eventually arrived on Earth, though, her cousin had grown up, becoming Superman; and she ended up with a surrogate family, who accepted her as one of their own. Kara now had a new family and even a big sister, who has always been on her side.

Jump to the present day where Kara has become Supergirl and is working alongside her sister Alex in the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO), battling against the criminals placed in the Phantom Zone by her late mother, who also ended up on Earth.

To make matters worse, Kara’s aunt Astra (who is the identical twin of her late mother Alura, I might add) was among the criminals in the Phantom Zone who is on Earth along with her deadly husband Non, who have plans for the planet much like the plans they have for Krypton before it imploded.

It has NOT been a happy reunion, however, between Kara and Astra with the once extremely close family members at odds with each other. So much so that Kara was thisclose to ending her aunt’s life, but instead Kara dragged Astra into the secret lair of the DEO, leaving her there as one of the many prisoners being held in that underground compound.

Of course, as we saw in last night’s winter finale of ‘Supergirl’, Astra getting caught was nothing more than a set-up. A set-up that actually allowed her husband Non and others from the Phantom Zone to break into Lord Technologies where a massive showdown took place. At first Non and his team easily took down Lord and his “henchman” but then the DEO (what seemed like all of its agents actually) showed up to take the super-powered beings down. But that was far from the case, as one DEO agent after another started going down with the final battle Non and Supergirl bringing the show to its cliffhanger ending.

Family matters so much to Kara, but there is going to be no love lost between her and her uncle Non; and depending on how their battle turns out (you know that battle is going to be colossal, right?!) Kara is going to be “gunning” for her aunt Astra next.

What do you think is going to happen between Non and Kara? Who do you think will come out as the winner of that battle? What do you think Astra, Non and the other Phantom Zone criminals want with Lord Technologies? Please share your thoughts on the show so far this season in our comments section below.
