Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 3): The Returned

Maveth

Viewers of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. were in for quite a surprise after last night’s mid-season finale on ABC that not only found Coulson and the team getting the upper-hand against Hydra (for now!) but also that Grant Ward returned to Earth from that desolate alternate universe as something much different than the man he once was.

As anyone who has seen the show knows, Coulson and Ward have been at odds for quite some time; but when Ward took Rosalind’s life, well, all bets were off. Coulson has been very intent on getting revenge on Ward; and he did just that before escaping through the portal back to Earth with Fitz by his side.

Unfortunately, the Ward whose life was ended by Coulson on that other planet returned to Earth as something far removed from the Ward viewers have all came to revile over the last two seasons. It’s true that Grant Ward had little to no redeeming values, but the creature that now inhabits his body is far worse than anything else we’ve seen in that universe. This is not going to go well for the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.

I don’t think the combined powers of all the Inhumans on Earth, the skills of Bobbi, May and the other team members or the smarts of Fitz and Simmons are going to be able to defeat whatever Ward has become.

That being said, Ward may have returned to Earth as something far different, but so did Coulson and Fitz. After all Coulson followed Ward, Fitz and the Hydra soldiers through the portal with one intent: to get revenge on Ward. He certainly did get his revenge, ending Ward’s life with that powerful robotic hand of his. I almost felt sorry for Ward, albeit only briefly. Given everything Ward has done to date, it’s harsh to say he deserved that kind of end even if it that one act will, assuredly, change and affect Coulson for a long time to come.

Also, Fitz thought he was saving Will only to learn that Will lost his life to that Inhuman creature and he had to battle the very thing he – and the rest of the S.H.I.E.L.D team – were hoping to keep off Earth. And they thought they had done just that, right? Fitz returned empty-handed (so to speak) – without Will that’s for sure – but he also took the life of that creature, or at least he thought so. How will that change him?

In the end, though, they got their team members back from that alternate universe and all of them are under the false impression that their mission was a success. When the truth is revealed, and you know Malick and that creature inside Ward will have some grand scheme for the S.H.I.E.L.D. team (not to mention the world), it’s not going to go well for anyone.
