‘Doctor Who’ (Season 9): Who Is Your Favorite Companion

Doctor Who Companions

The long-running series Doctor Who has had countless companions over the five decades of its history on the air; and just like how every viewer has “their” doctor – that one actor who epitomized the character more so than any other – the same thing can be said about his companions.

Every viewer has a favorite – and least favorite – companion whether it is from the classic episodes from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s or from the modern episodes that have aired over the past 10 years. In fact if you do a quick search online, there have been numerous polls listing the favorite companions of all time or just from the modern era. Those polls, of course, aren’t scientific by any stretch of the imagination, but it is always interesting to see the results.

With that thought in mind, it seemed like the right time to find out who is the favorite companion of our readers. The list that follows (which is not in any specific order) primarily consists of modern day companions, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t share your favorite classic companion.

1. Rory Williams (Arthur Carvill) – He appeared in a little less than 30 episodes throughout seasons 5 through 7 of the show, accompanying his girlfriend, then fiancée, then wife Amy Pond.

2. Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) – Martha was a doctor herself, who saved the Doctor’s life and the only long-term companion who chose to leave the Doctor.

3. River Song (Alex Kingston) – She was not only the Doctor’s “wife”, but the daughter of companions Amy and Rory and she willing gave up her life to save the Doctor.

4. Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) – Not only has Clara been a Dalek, she’s been copied as a Zygon and she stood up to the 11th, 10th and War Doctors all at the same time.

5. Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) – He may have only appeared in a dozen episodes, but he left quite an impression on viewers, and earned his very own spin-off series Torchwood.

6. Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) – She took on the mantle of the first companion when the show made its triumphant return to the small screen in 2005, she looked into the heart of the TARDIS and won the heart of the Doctor.

7. Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) – A personal favorite of mine, Amy was the “girl who waited” and she proved that a companion could be not only a wife and mother but have a successful career while traveling in space.

8. Sarah Jane Smith (the late Elisabeth Sladen) – Probably the most beloved companion of the entire series, she was an investigative journalist who travelled with the 3rd, 4th and 10th doctors and had TWO spin-off shows of her own.

9. Mickey Smith (Noel Clark) – Much like Rory, he followed the Doctor because of his then girlfriend Rose Tyler, but in the end he was married to former companion Martha Jones.

10. Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) – She could hold her own with the Doctor, becoming his best friend and allowing him to have fun after the whirlwind that was Rose Tyler; but her losing her memory of her adventures with him was one of the most heartbreaking moments.
