NCIS “Double Trouble” Review (Season 13, Episode 4)

NCIS "Double Trouble" Season 13 Episode 4 (1)

Kip Klugman, a disgraced agent from Leon Vance’s past, made a very unexpected appearance in last night’s episode of NCIS that found Gibbs and his team investigating the death of a young Navy Seaman.

The victim, Brian Dokes, robbed an illegal sports ring – oddly enough – housed in the back room of a lingerie store. He was trying to get enough money to pay for his father to continue receiving treatment at a rehab facility that supposedly celebrities can’t even afford to “visit.” Sadly, that ill-fated crime caused the young guy his life.

Enter Klugman – the aforementioned disgraced agent who, 10 years ago, framed Vance for a crime he did not commit. And since Vance is now Director of NCIS, it’s obvious that he was proven innocent and Klugman got the boot.

Vance, knowing all too well that Klugman could not be trusted with whatever information he had on the death of the seaman, threatened the dirty agent – as he was being forcibly escorted out of the NCIS offices; and that came back to bite Vance in the ass.

Just like the title of the episode, Vance was in double trouble because Klugman framed him yet again – this time with beating him up outside the Director’s home. This Klugman guy is definitely slick and cannot be trusted.

Perhaps it’s because the show is now in its 13th season on the air; or the fact that I’ve been watching it since its inception, all the way back to its two-hour embedded pilot within the long-running TV show ‘JAG’, but I’m having a hard time enjoying this new season of ‘NCIS’. Does anyone else feel this way?

Maybe it’s because the cases have just been a little lackluster so far, maybe it’s because the dynamic seems to be off within the team or maybe it’s because the show has simply been on for so long, but I’m finding myself a little bored with it all. In fact, I think I enjoy watching the repeats on the USA Network more than I do the new episodes.

Am I alone in this feeling?

Anyway, it was interesting to see Vance working alongside with Gibbs on the case, actually hitting the streets to follow Klugman in order to prove that he was involved with the whole sordid mess. He was, of course, but that was actually fairly easily deduced; or maybe I just saw it coming. Predictability may work in some TV shows, but not every single episode, right? I felt this episode was just bland and, quite frankly, a little boring.

I miss the banter between the members of the team – they just all seem off for some reason. I miss not knowing “whodunit”. And I miss seeing Jimmy – the morgue gremlin has been MIA for far too long.

So here is what I have to say about last night’s episode, it was yet another case of figuring out who the bad guy was, bringing him down as well as catching the thieves who were trying to take the drug dealer’s (yeah, the illegal sports ring guy has a very lucrative business going on, I mean had…) money right out from under him. Yippie skippy! But I’m still bored.

Let’s hope that next week’s episode that – according to the clips that were aired – will feature Abby outside the lab in a rather scary situation. Not that I want to see Abby in any kind of peril, but perhaps that is what this season needs. A good kick in the pants and a rousing escape episode. Fingers crossed.
