‘Once Upon a Time’ (Season 5): Emma Needs a Hero

Season 5

Emma Swan – the newly appointed Dark One in the world of Storybrooke, Maine on Once Upon a Time – needs a hero.

And like the song from the original 1984 movie “Footloose”, she’s “holding out for a hero ‘til the end of the night” or to be more precise “‘til she gets Excalibur out of that blasted stone inside her home.” The stone that she cannot break through even with her powerful magic.

And, who is that hero that she has pinned her hopes on: Killian “Captain Hook” Jones. Maybe, maybe not…

Despite how much the black eye-liner wearing “former” pirate has changed since his introduction into the world of fairytales, is he really the hero who can get her what she wants most?

Not exactly!

Emma actually wants Hook’s sword, which was used on Rumpelstiltskin before he became the Dark One. According to the cure that Belle discovered, she needs one key ingredient to bring back her husband: the one thing that touched Rumple before he went bad.

And what does Emma plan on doing with Rumple now that she used that sword to bring him out of his coma-like condition? She plans on making him the one thing he has always wanted to be: a hero. The hero that she has been holding out for.

There is no possible way that this is going to end well, right?

Elsewhere in the episode, David and King Arthur were on two different quests of their own. Not only were they seeking a special magic mushroom to be used to rescue Merlin from the tree where he is trapped within Camelot; but also, in the world of Storybrooke, the two men are seeking to find out who robbed the Camelot reliquary that was transported to the Maine town with them.

But it would seem that there is more to King Arthur than meets the eye. Did anyone else see this coming from the very beginning? From the first moment King Arthur graced the scene, I had a sinking feeling that something wasn’t right with him. And with the surprising appearance of Lancelot – who is clearly not dead! – as well as what he had to say to Mary Margaret about Arthur being the true evil in Camelot, I feel redeemed in my concern over the legend himself.

What did you think of last night’s episode? Were you surprised by the twist in Emma’s plan? Do you think she can really make Rumple the one with a pure heart, a true hero? Or is she just blowing smoke like the smoke that surrounds her whenever she disappears? What do you think King Arthur is really up to? Is there some hidden reason why he doesn’t want the people of Storybrooke to have that magic mushroom; and for that matter why would he lie about the magic bean that can transport them to Camelot? What is really going on his Majesty? Please share your thoughts in our comments section below.

‘Once Upon a Time’ will air the next episode of its fifth season on ABC on Sunday, October 18 at 8/7c.
