The Blacklist “The Troll Farmer” Review (Season 3, Episode 1) [Season Premiere]

The Blacklist - Season 3

Elizabeth “Liz” Keen is now the most wanted terrorist on the FBI’s hit list on The Blacklist and Raymond “Red” Reddington is right there by her side.

It should never be doubted that Red always has a plan, but even those plans can go awry when an unknown variable gets in the way; such as wayward sister of one of Red’s “associates” who initially helps them hide out from the citywide manhunt. Red’s plan to have “The Troll Farmer” (a rumor monger who specializes in fake Twitter reports to hide even bigger, more nefarious events) get them out of the city in a week (or so) fell through completely. This made it necessary for them to “fly by the seat of their pants” in looking for a way out of the city.

Part of that “new” plan is Liz changing her hair, becoming a blonde (I’m not sure I like her with this color, how about the rest of you?), and making her look even more like her deceased Russian spy mother. Her resemblance to her late mother obviously even unsettled Red albeit momentarily.

The Troll Farmer and his Army did their job very well, blanketing the internet with tips on supposed sightings of Red and Liz all over the city, allowing them to make an attempt to escape the city undetected. The van for which Red was hiding in made it through, but the van with Liz hiding in it did not.

And after being told by Red to think like her mother, Liz came up with an idea that for which Red could not support; and I have to agree with him. She decided to seek asylum with the Russian embassy, claiming she really was a Russian spy (which we all know she’s not). Her climbing that fence was a fancy piece of footwork just as Samar and Ressler were advancing on her, but that plans is going to backfire on her – especially in light of the clips for next week.

On the other end of the spectrum, there seems to be a new “big bad” in town working for the Cabal known as Mr. Solomon. He targets the baby of a young woman, demanding that the only way she will get her baby back is for her father to turn himself over. Who is her daddy? None other than Dembe.

Mr. Solomon is obviously a psychopath, as he informs Dembe that his granddaughter has been laced with a nerve agent that will take her life in a few weeks if Dembe doesn’t follow instructions. Dembe, of course, concedes; but I have a feeling that Mr. Solomon may have underestimated Dembe. I don’t see things ended well for Mr. Solomon.

What did you think of last night’s season premiere of ‘The Blacklist’? What do you think of Liz’s new look? Do you think that Red will sit still while Liz is in the Russian Embassy? How do you think Ressler and the rest of the FBI team will handle this latest development? What do you think the Cabal will do with Dembe? Please share your thoughts our comments section below.

The next episode of the third season of ‘The Blacklist will air on NBC on Thursday, October 8 at 9/8c.
