Rosewood “Pilot” Review (Season 1, Episode 1) [Series Debut]

Rosewood

What do you think of when you see a charming, cocky and intelligent man sparring with a beautiful kick-ass police detective? If you are an avid TV viewer like myself (and I know there are a lot of you out there), you just might think of the long-running ABC drama ‘Castle’.

This time around, however, it is actually the new FOX drama Rosewood that has the charming, cocky intelligent man being none other than Dr. Beaumont Rosewood, Jr. (known to his friends as Rosie), the Miami-based private pathologist consultant who works with the Miami police department.

His reluctant “partner” (if you will) is the beautiful kick-ass Detective Annalise Villa, the former Miami resident who recently transferred back to her hometown from the NYPD where she quickly rose up the ranks because she puts everything else into her job.

In the pilot episode of ‘Rosewood’, Rosie’s mom Donna comes to him about the death of a beloved student – Nora Grayson – who supposedly drove her car on a Miami highway at breakneck speed, ending up in the ocean. Mama Rosewood doesn’t believe that Nora would have been driving on the highway late at night and asks her son to find out the truth.

He does just that with the assistance of Detective Villa, who is none too happy to have Rosie tagging along in her investigation. Is anyone have a strange sense of déjà vu?

Simply put Rosie is a bit like Dr. Gregory House – without the unsettling bedside manner (if anything Rosie is far too charming) combined with the analytical genius of Sherlock Holmes – without all of that man’s quirks. But is that enough?

On the other hand, Detective Villa is, sadly, the stereotypical tough female cop with baggage of her own – her husband died very unexpectedly of a pulmonary embolism, causing her to move back to Miami.

As for the storyline of the pilot episode, Rosie and Villa figure out that a local DJ known as Prince Mendez (aka Prince 305) was the one who killed Donna’s favorite musical student Nora because she learned that he was bringing cocaine into Miami on his boat disguised as vinyl records.

About the only really interesting part of this show is the high tech pathology lab – called Magic City Lab, Inc. (Original right? Yes I’m being sarcastic!) run by Rosie and manned by his sister Pippy (known as the Toxicology Queen) and her fiancée Tara Milly Izikoff, fondly known as TMI in the lab. That lab could easily put anything that ‘CSI’ or ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ to shame in a heartbeat. But a fancy lab does not a TV show make.

Oh, and the other cool factor for the show is that ‘The Dead Zone’ star Anthony Michael Hall appeared in the pilot, but the downside is that he won’t be seen again. In fact, ‘Breakout Kings’ and ‘The Wire’ star Domenick Lombardozzi will be joining the cast as Captain Ira Hornstock.
