Switched at Birth “Between Hope & Faith” Review (Season 4, Episode 13)

The Kennish family on Switched at Birth has sure gone through the ringer lately what with the recently announced financial woes discovered by John’s new accountant, Daphne losing her college scholarship and now Toby and his pseudo girlfriend Lily expecting a baby that has been diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome.

Needless to say, because of John’s overwhelming concern for their financial future [not to mention his disappointment with Toby’s life choices], he over-reacted to the revelation that his son and Lily are pregnant with a special needs child. But once Katheryn learns the truth about their money problems (thanks to a well-placed conversation with Regina, who obviously noticed that something wasn’t quite right with John), she not only gets John to admit the truth but also to try to come to terms with Toby and the baby.

Speaking of Regina, thanks to yet another well-placed conversation involving Bay and Toby, she decides to – albeit impulsively – go to Atlanta to do some in-person research on boyfriend Eric’s ex-wife Hope Paxton. Since Eric asked her to move in with him and son Will, Regina felt she needed to know more about Hope – specifically if she is still as bad as described by Eric. And after learning the truth about Eric and Will (the fact that he kidnapped his son and fled with him), Daphne told her mother that she was not going to Atlanta alone.

I give Daphne and Regina credit for contriving a reason to pay a visit to the car shop where Hope works, but I also have to question their logic. Yes, they got the information Regina needed about Hope – she may be a 17-year recovering addict, but it is clear that she and husband Jared are drug dealers. They are just very fortunate that Hope and Jared to press the issue with them any further and they got out of Atlanta safe and sound.

In the world of best friends Travis and Emmett – things aren’t much better. Travis made a weekend visit to Los Angeles so the two buddies could check out a championship football game. That, of course, went sour thanks to Emmett going a little too “Hollywood” for Travis’s sake. One part of me can understand Emmett wanting to pursue his career goals, but when it comes at the expense of a long-time friendship, there is a part of me that just wants to say “for shame, Emmett, for shame”. I have a feeling that Travis is not going to be visiting Emmett any time soon; and Emmett will hopefully come to regret what happened.

Where decisions are concerned, it was interesting to see that despite growing up in two very different households, Bay and Regina shared the same belief system while Daphne and Katheryn shared an opposing one. And while Bay wanted Toby to be realistic (at least in her mind) about the harsh realities about Down’s Syndrome, Toby and Lily both came to the agreement that they wanted to keep the baby. This decision, by no means, was an easy one – and that was expressed so succinctly by Toby when he shared that he won’t be able to do that without the support of his parents and his sister.

What are your thoughts on tonight’s episode? Do you think Regina did the right thing by going to Atlanta to meet Hope in person? Do you think that Toby and Lily are making the right decision about their baby? Do you like how much living in Los Angeles has seemingly changed Emmett? Please share your thoughts below.
