Cedar Cove “Batter Up” Review (Season 3, Episode 6)

Hey batter, batter, batter…

It was batters up on Cedar Cove with Paul Watson on one side and Jack Griffith on the other. That isn’t just a metaphor for these two men, as they weren’t only captains of opposing teams for the town’s annual charity softball game (raising money for the local animal shelter, I might add) but also (to a certain extent) standing opposite of each other for the heart of Olivia Lockhart.

That last part may be a bit of a stretch since Paul has made it clear – especially to his visiting sister Liz – that Olivia is in a long-term relationship with Jack; and he is choosing to respect that; but after overhearing Liz push her brother about his not-so-well-hidden feelings for Olivia, Jack is none too happy with the new District Attorney.

You can’t really blame Jack for how he feels towards Paul; after all, Olivia seems all too happy to spend a lot of her time with Paul (both inside and outside of court) especially the time she is supposed to be spending with him. None of this helps their already strained relationship; and with Jack and Paul fighting in the middle of the charity game in front of pretty much the whole town, let’s just say this little display isn’t going to win either of them any points with the town judge.

Meanwhile, Grace announces her happy news to daughter MaryEllen, who is none too pleased about it. Not that she doesn’t want her mom to be happy with Cliff, but because she is upset that her own boyfriend John didn’t propose to her, and because of their opposing points of view (John wants to stay in New York and MaryEllen wants to stay in Cedar Cove), they are now taking a break from their relationship. For Grace’s sake I hope that her daughter can move past her disappointment and be a willing participant in her mother’s second marriage.

There is also the fight that will assuredly take place between the vile Warren and Olivia now that the former has bought out Will’s share of their family’s home. Olivia was hoping that she and her brother could reasonably work together, but now that Warren is in the mix, things are going to get ugly.

The one storyline that, at least for me, just isn’t that interesting is Justine and Luke. I loved their relationship last season, but this season it has been a bit flat. The couple is now being pulled into trying to help Luke’s former Navy Seal buddy Matt, who has seemingly gone off the rails since coming home from service. Does anyone find what they are doing boring?

What are your thoughts on Paul? Do you like his addition to the town and in Olivia’s life? What are your thoughts on Warren? Do you think MaryEllen will come around where her mother’s marriage is concerned? Please share your comments on tonight’s episode below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Cedar Cove’ will air on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, August 29 at 8/7c.
