Cedar Cove “Civil War” Review (Season 3, Episode 5)

Cedar Cove Cast

A civil war is brewing in Cedar Cove between siblings Will Jeffers and Olivia Lockhart over the former’s intentions for their family home in the development deal with that dreaded Warren Saget, Jr. And while Olivia may be under the impression that she can handle it outside of the court, but given what transpired at the end of tonight’s episode makes it clear that Will and Warren have something nefarious planned against Olivia.

This is either going to backfire on Will and Warren (please, oh please, let this backfire on them) or it’s going to create such a maelstrom for Olivia that their familial bond will forever be changed.

There is also another civil war coming where Olivia’s relationship with Jack is concerned. While they have both agreed to slow things down between them – rather than calling it quits on their relationship all together – Jack’s friendship with Alex (or more specifically their supporting each other as part of their AA recovery) and Olivia’s growing friendship with new DA Paul Watson are going to continue to complicate a relationship that is on the skids regardless of how hard both Jack and Olivia may (or may not) be working to keep it on steady ground.

As I have stated before, this is a typical storyline troupe for all shows that feature a beloved romance between the lead characters, bringing in other love interests to pull the main couple apart. Olivia and Jack are just like all other TV couples: they have to work through all their problems and growing pains before they can become more. Let’s just hope for the fans’ sake that Alex and Paul don’t completely pull Olivia and Jack apart for good.

On the other side of the spectrum, Grace and Cliff may have broken up at the end of last week’s episode, but with a lot of help from Peggy and Bob (who were celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, by the way), they were able to bring the couple back together for a much-more memorable proposal than their first inside the barn on Cliff’s property. And this time around Grace had no qualms about accepting his ring. Let’s just hope that she follows through on it given her reticence to getting married again.

Another relationship that seems to be a little rocky is that of Justine and Luke, the latter of whom learned – rather unexpectedly – that she was engaged, at one point it time, to Warren Saget. I don’t know about everyone else, but I still find it hard to believe that Justine would have ever agreed to being engaged to Warren.

Regardless, I have a feeling that Luke will get over that lapse of judgment (in Justine not telling him that truth about her past) soon enough; but the introduction of Matt, Luke’s fellow Navy Seal buddy who is new to Cedar Cove, could create a rift between them. Justine – based on details Matt shared with local café owner Moon – has a feeling that Matt is lying about his life, not to mention running away from it, while Luke wants to believe his military buddy that that is not the case. This situation isn’t the same as having another person come between their relationship – like with Paul and Alex – but it could have just as catastrophic results. We shall see…

What do you think Will and Warren have planned behind Olivia’s back? Do you think that Grace will follow through with her impending marriage to Cliff? What are your thoughts on Matt? Please share your comments below.
