Cedar Cove “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” Review (Season 3, Episode 4)

You would think in a quaint town like Cedar Cove that a dinner party would be a pleasant affair, but the one held in Saturday night’s episode of the Hallmark Channel series was anything but.

Upon learning that it was Paul’s birthday, Olivia insisted on holding a welcome to town dinner party for him (since he doesn’t like celebrating his birthday). The dinner party included the prerequisite guests: Peggy and Bob; Grace and Cliff and Justine and Luke as well as the birthday boy himself, Jack and – surprise, surprise Alex.

Alex and Jack are friends merely because they are in the same AA program together; and I give Olivia credit for accepting that. Bob, however, is unsure about Jack’s friendship with Alex and Olivia’s growing interest in Paul. There are, of course, reasons for bringing both of these characters into the lives of Jack and Olivia. This is a typical troupe of all TV shows: get the lead characters together, then pull them apart and then separate them by other love interests.

But, let’s get back to that disastrous dinner party, shall we? Grace and Cliff were questioned by a well-meaning Peggy about plans for their wedding, which only led to more problems. Grace isn’t ready even though she does truly love Cliff, which ended in their breaking up. Paul inadvertently put his foot in his mouth with Jack by asking him about his taste in wine only to learn about Jack being a recovering alcoholic. Awkward, indeed; but Jack didn’t seem to hold it against the man.

The worst part of the dinner was Olivia’s brother showing up unexpectedly with reviled Warren Saget in tow to discuss the duo’s plans for his and Olivia’s childhood home. This will, I’m sure, be the bone of contention between the siblings and throughout the rest of the season. In my opinion, it’s a dumb move on her brother’s part to go against Olivia in this matter; and given her legal expertise, he isn’t going to win out.

The B-story was focused on Justine’s new housemates, Linnette and Rebecca, and new-in-town resident Gloria, who – not ironically (it is Cedar Cove after all, you know?!) – are neighbors. This is yet another convenience written into the show to further on the storyline of what brought Gloria to town. Viewers can surmise she is either the daughter given up for adoption by Carrie, Linnette’s mother, before her parents were married or she is there on behalf of that long-last child. Given that Rebecca discovered Gloria’s real driver’s license says her name is Laura Moore, the mystery will deepen over the course of this season, but since this is Cedar Cove, the mystery won’t be that deep or difficult to figure out.

The one surprise storyline was the arrival of Warren Saget’s wife Kelly. Yep, it would seem that Warren is married – who would be crazy enough to marry him is my question. But then again, while he was still married to Kelly, he was engaged to Justine (who was crazy enough to have a relationship with him, SIGH!), but at least smart enough to get away from him. But now, thanks to his unwelcome appearance at the dinner party, Luke has learned that they were engaged. I don’t think this will cause any kind of rift between the relatively new couple, but I’m sure there will be some fans who will be worried about that truth being revealed. I wouldn’t worry about it, though.

What are your thoughts on the episode? Do you think Gloria is the Macaffe’s long-lost daughter? Do you think that Warren’s wife Kelly will stick around? What will happen next with Cliff and Grace? Will Paul and/or Alex come between Olivia and Jack or will the feud between Olivia and Will pull Jack and Olivia closer together? Please share your thoughts on the show below.

The next new episode of the third season of ‘Cedar Cove’ will air on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, August 15 at 8/7c.
