Cedar Cove “A Helping Hand” Review (Season 3, Episode 2)

On Saturday night’s episode of the Hallmark Channel family-friendly series Cedar Cove, Grace Sherman found a surprise visitor at home: her returning daughter Maryellen, who arrived in town a day early. Being the observant mother that she is, Grace had a feeling that her daughter was hiding something.

What was funny about this storyline was that Grace overheard her daughter talking to her chef-photographer boyfriend John about “our baby”, believing that she will soon be a grandmother. Grace was a bit presumptuous, though, learning that the truth of the matter was that John and Maryellen are actually moving back to town, taking over a popular restaurant that will serve as a gallery under Maryellen’s direction.

The bigger problem, however, is that John shared in private with Maryellen that there is a problem with their investors, who were going to help fund their taking over that restaurant. I have to wonder if the investors don’t come through will John and Maryellen being asking her mother for a helping hand?

Elsewhere, Peggy approached her husband Bob about starting a catering business; and given that they are already busy with the bed and breakfast that they run, Bob wasn’t too inclined to the new idea. His stance caused a bit of a rift between the long-married couple; one that seemed to be put to rest not only based on advice given to Bob by Jack about doing what makes Peggy happy rather than what makes him happy but also a helping hand (so to speak) with Grace asking Peggy to run the town’s event committee, which isn’t exactly the same as having her own catering company, but with Bob’s help, it will be the next best thing.

I have to admit this storyline was quite comical with Peggy giving Bob the cold shoulder, but since he has been married to her for so long, you’d think he would have learned by now to work with his wife rather than against her.

Then there is the lingering issue between Oliva and Jack. He wants them to move in together, but she is unsure of that next step in their relationship because she hasn’t forgiven him for lying to her and, worse yet, backsliding on his sobriety. To be honest, I can’t blame her for feeling the way that she does toward him and I marvel at the fact that he seems so set on her forgiving him so soon. It is trouble in paradise for them, and the introduction of new DA Paul Watson into Olivia’s workday life is only going to make matters more difficult.

Oh, and is anyone else not really caring about Justine’s hunt for a job or that her Uncle Will wants to help her out financially. I honestly think that the writers are just trying to find a storyline for these characters, but they can’t seem to come up with anything more interesting to tell. Give these characters, as well as Justine’s boyfriend Luke, something meatier to work with please, as it’s getting a bit boring.
