The Fosters “It’s My Party” Review (Season 3, Episode 6)

DANNY NUCCI, ANNAMARIE KENOYER, CHERINDA KINCHERLOW, TOM WILLIAMSON, ALBERTO DE DIEGO

The episode of The Fosters that aired on Monday night on ABC Family primarily focused on Callie’s birthday. Her younger brother Jude, with the help of the rest of the Adams Foster family, organized a surprise party; and while Callie doesn’t seem like the type who likes any kind of surprise, she certainly went along with things.

There were problems, though. Let’s take a look at the issues that came up:

• Callie wanted to get a car, using the money that she has saved up from her job.

Mariana, as her birthday gift to Callie, gives her new sister her Quinceanera money; and they decided to get a car together. As you can imagine that didn’t quite work out as planned especially once Callie learned the truth about Mariana and Wyatt. Which brings us to the next problem.

• Wyatt found out that Mariana and Mat are no longer together, asking Mariana out.

Mariana believed that Callie wouldn’t have a problem with her dating Wyatt since they had been broken up for quite some time and, in her mind, she believed that Callie wouldn’t care about them having sex either. That was a big mistake on her part.

• AJ has been making it clear that he is interested in Callie; and they finally both moved forward with their feelings, kissing each other right outside the house.

Mom Stef, obviously, saw them kissing and that rash decision is going to come back to bite them in the ass. You would think that Callie learned her lesson from her relationship with Brandon; and there is also a part of me that has to wonder just why the writers are going down this path again, as it is unnecessary and ridiculously repetitive.

• Brandon and AJ are still at odds with each other, getting into a fight right in the middle of Callie’s birthday party

Brandon has been suspicious of AJ from the very beginning; and catching AJ in a lie about who he was talking to on the cell phone that Mike gave him has only made their animosity toward each other worse. And one can only guess that when Brandon learns about AJ and Callie kissing, that animosity is going to turn to outright hatred.

Elsewhere in the episode, Stef and Lena have started seeing a couples’ counselor, who gave them the task of writing lists of the things they love and dislike about their partner. Stef not only doesn’t like having to do the lists but also dreads the list that Lena will write. This may be considered a worthwhile effort to help their marriage, but I honestly think this will backfire on them.
