‘Once Upon a Time’ (Season 4): What Went Wrong

When Once Upon a Time debuted back on October 23, 2011, the show became an instant hit, capturing the hearts and minds of viewers and garnering impressive ratings. The show had an incredible first season, showing a different look at famous fairytale characters like Snow White, the Evil Queen, Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, the Mad Hatter and so many other classic stories.

But over the course of the show’s following three seasons, the show has taken a turn; and not necessarily a good one. Throughout season two, viewers saw the aftermath of breaking Regina’s curse and trying to ward off the curiosity of accidentally visitor Greg Mendel, who was so much more than meets the eye.

As season three rolled out, heroes and villains banded together to rescue the kidnapped Henry from Neverland, the world where a very evil Peter Pan resided. And once that adventure, if you will, concluded with Henry safely returned to both of his mothers and grandparents, the residents of Storybook had to deal with The Wicked Witch of the West – aka Zelena, Regina’s older, half-sister.

Those two seasons were a trial for the viewers, many of whom were upset about the twists in the storylines and the abrupt changes in most of the classic characters. This, for many fans of the show, was the beginning of the end; but the final nail in the coffin could very well have been with the direction of the show’s current fourth season where the villains have been trying to get their own happy endings. In fact, given how low the ratings have dropped for the once powerhouse series, there have been more than one final nail in the coffin, as silly as that may seem.

Don’t even get me started with the crazy direction of the relationships on the show; namely, parting Robin Hood from Regina just as she was beginning to have a happy life and finally becoming a good person and then there is the pairing of Will Scarlett with Belle. Granted Belle deserves to be happy, and perhaps Mr. Gold isn’t the right person, but I can’t see that Will is either. And worse yet, the reveal in last night’s episode that Zelena, masquerading as Marian, is pregnant with Robin’s child and he is refusing to return to Storybook with Regina. I think I just might be sick!!

What do you few remaining viewers of the show think about what went wrong with the series that started out as so very special, charming and endearing? Is there anything at this late point in time that could be used to save the show or is it far too late? The next new episode of the fourth season of ‘Once Upon a Time’ will air on ABC on Sunday, May 3 at 8/7c.
