‘Grimm’ (Season 4): What the Hell Happened to Hank?

Grimm - Season 4

Since the debut of Grimm back on October 28, 2011, Detective Hank Griffin (series lead Russell Hornsby) has had to deal with a lot of changes in his professional live, especially where his partner Detective Nick Burkhardt (series lead David Giuntoli) is concerned.

Once the truth about Nick’s background is revealed [that he is a Grimm, a centuries-old family of hunters of the supernatural Wesen] to his very bewildered partner, Nick has seen his fair share of stranger occurrences, mysteries deaths and so much more that would put any sane person into the nuthouse. And, quite frankly, that very situation nearly became reality for Hank a time or two.

But what happened to Hank in last night’s new episode of the show, focusing on the mysterious deaths of two men in Portland and the attack on a third, really took a much different turn than expected.

With the evidence gathered, the detectives, Sgt. Wu (series regular Reggie Lee) and Deputy Sheriff Janelle Farris (returning guest star Toni Trucks) discovered that a Native American teenager named Simon George (guest star Booboo Stewart), who witnessed the brutal beating death of his father when he was merely five years old, had set out to exact vengeance on the three men behind his father’s death.

The method behind Simon’s vengeance was the Mishipeshu, a powerful, mythological underwater panther that has the head and paws of a giant cat. During Simon’s power quest (similar to a vision quest in the Native American culture) would call upon this creature, which would inhabit his body, allowing him to attack and kill the men who killed his father.

Where Hank (and eventually Janelle) became involved with the Mishipeshu was during a sweat lodge ceremony (of sorts) that allowed both of them to travel into the past life of Simon; but it seemed that Hank was the most affected [at least at first]. For a short time, Hank became the five-year-old version of Simon, witnessing the beating of the boy’s father as if he were actually there; and eventually having the Mishipeshu take over his body to go after the final man who killed Simon’s dad.

In the end, thankfully, Nick – with a major assist from Hector (guest star Gregory Cruz) – an elder in Simon’s tribe, who had been assisting the police in their investigation – were able to extract the Mishipeshu from Hank’s body; but they were not able to arrest that final man, who helped to kill Simon’s father: damn lack of evidence! Enter Janelle at the end of the episode, though, as she was overcome by the Mishipeshu; and the creature ended the life of that third man.

Needless to say, this was an incredibly intense encounter for Hank, and while it assuredly won’t be the last, I’m sure it will leave a lasting impression on the veteran detective.
