‘Gotham’ (Season 1): Unraveling Dr. Leslie Thompkins

Gotham The Blind Fortune Teller Episode 16 01

Back on January 5, Gotham returned from its winter break with new episodes on FOX, introducing a new character to the series: Dr. Leslie Thompkins, portrayed by actress Morena Baccarin of ‘Firefly’, ‘Stargate: SG1’ and ‘Homeland’ fame.

In the DC Comics canon, Dr. Thompkins was a close friend and medical colleague of Thomas Wayne, late father of Bruce aka Batman, who served as a surrogate parent to him after his parents were murdered. She later became a confidant of the caped crusader.

In the TV version, Bruce’s parents have only recently been murdered and Dr. Thompkins meets a young Detective James Gordon (series lead Ben McKenzie) during his short-lived punishment of working as a guard at Arkham Prison.

While Jim was eventually able to get back on the force, she followed him taking over the role of Gotham Medical Examiner, when the former ME was arrested for harvesting body parts. Nature took its course with Dr. Thompkins and James, not surprisingly, and they have begun a relationship.

Granted, as all fans of the popular superhero story know, James eventually marries Barbara Kean (series regular Erin Richards), but right now, they are out-of-sorts with each other; although at the end of last week’s episode it certainly looked like Barbara wanted to get back together with her former fiancé only to find him in a deep liplock with the doc.

But what I would like to know is where do the writers of the show plan to take her character? She has already shown her expertise as a doctor, she seems more than capable of dealing with all of the crazy cases for which Jim investigates and seems unusually excited about all the strange circumstances behind the criminals involved in those cases.

Obviously, the storyline of ‘Gotham’ is far removed from the world of Batman so it will be quite some time before Dr. Thompkins becomes that confidant of The Black Knight, but where will “things” go from here? How long will Dr. Thompkins stay Jim’s girlfriend? Will she continue to work at the medical examiner’s office for the duration? When will she meet up with the current young Bruce Wayne (series regular David Mazouz)? Will we see a showdown between the good doctor and Jim’s former love Barbara? You know the fans will want to see that cat fight (pun intended).

One thing is for sure, Dr. Thompkins will be around for the rest of the show’s first season, as she is expected to appear most of the remaining five episodes.

What are your thoughts on Dr. Thompkins? Do you think she and Jim make a good couple or would you rather he return to Barbara to keep more in line with canon? Have you gotten any vibes that there might be more than meets the eye with this woman? Pleas share your thoughts in our comment section below.

‘Gotham’ will be back with a new episode of its debut season on FOX on Monday, March 2 at 8/7c.
