Supernatural Chat: 6 Reasons Dean Needs to Keep the Mark of Cain a While Longer

Supernatural Halt Catch Fire Season 10 Episode 13 01

Hey there, Supernatural fans! How about last week’s episode, eh? I don’t know about you guys, but I loved the adventures of Teen Dean.

For this installment of Supernatural Chat, I wanted to talk about all the reasons I think Dean should maybe keep the Mark of Cain for a little while. I’m crossing my fingers that I don’t jinx myself though, considering how I wrote I wanted to see Demon Dean stick around and they took him away the very next day.

Here’s hoping that doesn’t happen with the mark, here’s why.

It’s Still New

I know that Dean has had the Mark of Cain for a while now, but it seems we are learning more about it all the time. I thought he, Sam and Cas would find a way to get rid of it, but it has proven to be a lot more complicated than that. It wasn’t until Sam suggested that Dean could find a way to live with it that I realized it might stay around. It makes me wonder if we’re going to keep learning new things about the Mark and how it can be controlled, which is very intriguing.

It Gives Him More Depth

Having Dean infected with the juice of the Mark of Cain has added more depth to his character. He accepted the Mark and went looking for the Blade for a single purpose, but I never thought he’d still have it this long. We’ve seen Dean as the guy who just wants to hunt things and save the world, but he’s never had something affect him this deeply for this long and it brings out more of his character every day.

So Much Strength

I’ve always found Dean to be a strong guy. He’s been to Hell and back, he’s been to Purgatory and back, he’s died, he’s had to deal with the pain of those closest to him dying – basically he’s one tough mofo. But his battle with the Mark is unlike anything we’ve seen from him before and I keep marveling at what he’s had to do to fight it. I know that the Mark has gotten the best of him a few times, but I think Dean has fought it harder than anyone else could have. Sure, Cain figured out how to live with it, but he wasn’t any better off than Dean so soon after he got it.

A Constant Battle

Remember back when Sam was one of the “psychic kids” and had to deal with all of the strangeness that went along with that, such as painful visions? That is something that had an impact on him for a long while. It was a constant battle that he had to fight, in addition to the normal monsters that he and his brother were hunting. I’d like to see Dean battle with the Mark for that same reason. Hunting has almost gotten too easy for him and I enjoy seeing where this new challenge has taken him.

All About That Angst

If you watch Supernatural, you’re addicted to angst, don’t even try to deny it. We should have meetings (Me: “Hi my name is Michelle and I’m addicted to man pain.” Fandom: “Hi, Michelle!”). There’s no denying how much I’ve enjoyed the emotional trauma that Dean has been put through because of the Mark. Not that I want the poor guy to always suffer, but I love the drama that has come about because of it.

Control Equals Power

Dean has been doing his best to follow Sam’s advice and stay in control of the Mark. It hasn’t been easy, but he’s had moments where he’s been able to pull it off. Those moments could get longer and longer, until Dean is in complete control of it. If that happens, the Winchesters would be quite the force to be reckoned with. Again, I can’t help but to draw similarities to something that happened with Sam. When Sam drank demon blood, he was a badass demon-killer. With control of the Mark and the Blade, Dean would be a monster-killer the likes of which we’ve never seen. But without the homicidal tendencies to kill innocent people. Sure, it’s far-fetched that things would ever go that far for very long, but just think how awesome it would be while it lasted.

What do you think about Dean and the Mark of Cain on Supernatural? Do you want to see him keep it or lose it as soon as possible? Sound off in the comments below, I love hearing from you guys!
