Constantine Season 1 Review “The Saint of Last Resorts, Part 2”

The return of Constantine took me by surprise, so much so that I didn’t even realize it was on until it was halfway over. Granted, the time shift and NBC’s lack of promotion played a big part, but the show had also kind of slipped my mind over the past month. While it had been getting better throughout the first part of the season, it had failed to make a truly lasting impression. As such, I was hopeful that, if nothing else, “The Saint of Last Resorts, Part 2” would keep the show’s momentum going.

Fortunately, that’s exactly what this episode did, delivering the show’s best hour yet. Honestly, the biggest flaw is that this didn’t really feel like much of a continuation of what happened in the midseason finale, with the story veering off in a wildly new direction. However, given that the new direction led to an episode-long possession and exorcism attempt, I think it was more than worth the shift.

John having to summon a demon into his body to survive was a surprising turn of events, making for an exciting, unpredictable hour. Sure, it’s not like there was ever any real risk of Constantine being destroyed by Pazuzu, but seeing what the demon would make him do next was intense stuff, especially as the body count continued to rise. Of course, John being John, he had no problem using the horrible things Pazuzu does to claim some cred at the prison. Between his continued mastery of Constantine’s personality and his performance as Pazuzu, Matt Ryan was in top form tonight, once again proving himself the perfect fit for this role.

Anne Marie was also given more dimension this week, becoming the most intriguing member of the Newcastle crew we’ve met yet. She’s struggling with the guilt she has for introducing John to magic in the first place, as well as for leaving him to die beneath the church. Last time, she threw a lot of anger and hate John’s way, so it was nice to see them come to terms and rekindle their friendship here.
