Jane The Virgin Episode 9 Review “Chapter Nine” – Miracles Happen

Jane The Virgin Episode 9 07

In this episode of Jane the Virgin, called “Chapter Nine,” more is learned about Petra when she gives Jane and Rafael another headache, but it’s her mother who causes the most trouble.

I don’t know if the timing of this episode was planned out, but I had to smile at the storyline about Rogelio’s award show nomination on the heels of this wonderful and its beautiful star, Gina Rodriguez, getting Golden Globe nominations. I only hope that we don’t see a repeat of Rogelio’s awkward moment on that night, even though it was kind of hilarious to see him stand up and have to sit back down when his name wasn’t called.

Now that we know a more about Petra background, I feel a tad more sympathetic towards her. She’s a woman whose life is being guided by some unfortunate incidents and I have to wonder how far she would have taken things if her mother hadn’t been there constantly egging her on. I didn’t like that Petra went after the baby, but I’m sure if she’d gotten the money she needed, she would have left them alone. Instead, she opened herself up to investigation and now Rafael knows that she’s a fake. Good luck trying to get anything out of Rafael ever again.

As much bad as there was in the episode, there was some good as well. As Jane and Rafael said, miracles do happen sometimes. They got Petra to give up her case and Xo got to meet her idol at the party after the award show. When I found out that Rogelio had set up that meeting, I was almost disappointed, but when I saw he didn’t want to take any credit, I loved that he did that for her. Rogelio is learning that you don’t have to be the center of attention and you can do things for people without any reward for yourself. It was a wonderful moment and I think it bodes well for a relationship between him and Xo, especially now that Jane has told her mom to knock off the sacrifices and live her own life.

The episode almost ended on a happy ending, until the unthinkable happened. I know people toss around that word “unthinkable” when they want to emphasize a shocking moment, but I truly mean it in its truest definition. I never, ever thought I’d see anything bad happen to Jane’s abuela. It’s hard to know how this show will handle something as serious as a grandmother being pushed down a flight of stairs. There’s enough humor in the show that we could see Alba in traction in the next episode ordering the nurses around at the hospital. But there’s also enough drama that she could be seriously injured and everyone fearing for her life. You’ll notice that I did not (and will not) say that there’s a possibility that she is dead, because I can’t imagine this show without her.

Now we just have to get through the winter hiatus and wait until January 19 to find out what happens next.

My favorite bits:

Everything in Jane’s room encouraging her to write. Wait. So that doesn’t only happen to me?

Rafael’s first ride on a bus. It was indeed cute.

Rafael asking Jane to indulge his 14-year-old self.

Thinking that Jane’s main character in her story sounded a bit like her mom.

Xo not only praying to her god, but getting fashion advice from her as well.

“A hug from Rogelio is like a rabbit’s foot: Lucky, rare and soft to the touch.” – Okay, who else now wants a hug from Rogelio?

Ivan learning how to break out of his binds, from Rogelio. Well, at least the first part.

Michael offering to help Jane with Petra.

Jane pointing out maybe she wasn’t the naive one, since Rafael was the one who married Petra.

Xo taking a moment to say how proud she was of Jane’s story, before telling her how upset she was about the “loose in Lucy” comment.

Jane telling her mom she needed to stop with the sacrificing. I literally “aww”d out loud at that.

Finding out that Xo signed Jane’s consent form for her.

Ivan’s protest when the girls turned off the TV and the fact that he missed the actual escape part. Hilarious.

Xo’s hero telling her to stick with her musical career.

Jane informing Rafael’s 14-year-old self they were cleared for kissing.

Finding out that Rogelio had send Xo’s hero, but didn’t want to take the credit. Aw, he really is growing.

Jane telling Xo to go for it with Rogelio.
