‘Pretty Little Liars’ (Season 5): Merry Christmas, Bitches

Pretty Little Liars Season 5 Holiday Special How the 'A' Stole Christmas (12)

For the first time in the show’s history, Pretty Little Liars aired a Christmas episode that found the girls – Aria, Emily, Hanna and Spencer (series leads Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, Ashley Benson and Troian Bellisario) – working to prove Spencer’s innocence in the murder of Bethany Young, the girl who was actually found in Allison’s (series regular Sasha Pieterse) grave.

They were also supposedly getting the holiday “off” according to the message from ‘A’ inside the snow globe given to the girls by the town Santa – which wasn’t weird at all, right? Especially when you think about the person in the black hoodie that was following Spencer and Hanna around inside of Allison’s house. So much for having an ‘A’ free Christmas!

Just like every episode of the teen soap opera, this holiday episode was filled with twists and turns, including the pre-teen versions of Allison and the four girls who had a run-in with Hanna at the church; Allison showing up at the DeLaurentis Ice Ball with her new replacement friends and the reappearance of CeCe Drake (recurring guest star Vanessa Ray).

There were also the new revelations that Paige’s (recurring guest star Lindsey Shaw) parents want her to leave Rosewood, going to California to be them before graduation and the possibility that Detective Holbrook (recurring guest star Sean Faris) could be involved with Allison and that Allison is being haunted by visions of her late mother Jessica (recurring guest star Andrea Parker) and recently departed Mona (former series regular Janel Parrish). [I am going to guess that Allison’s visions of both women will come to an end with the airing of the holiday episode, though.]

On the lighter side of the episode was seeing Lucas (recurring guest star Brendan Robinson) dressed up as Santa Claus at the Ice Ball and the four couples having a nice Christmas meal together (how are their parents not around, though?!).

If you watched the Christmas episode of ‘Pretty Little Liars’ last night, what did you think of the episode?

‘Pretty Little Liars’ will be back for the rest of its fifth season on ABC Family on Tuesday, January 6 at 9/8c.
