NCIS Season 12 Review “Grounded” – Meet the Family

NCIS 1209 Grounded 02

In this episode of NCIS, called “Grounded,” Ellie’s husband finally meets her work family, just in time for a terrorist threat before Thanksgiving.

It’s always awkward meeting the family of your significant other, even when that “family” are those people you work with on a daily basis. I liked Jake right away and it looked like the team did as well, but I wasn’t sure what to make of his and Ellie’s relationship. In fact, the most awkward thing about Jake showing up in this episode was the way he and Ellie grumbled throughout most of it.

I assumed that if Ellie were married, she would be happily married, but it looks like her job at NCIS has been causing some friction back at home. I guess when you’re used to being able to share everything about your work with your spouse, it becomes an issue when you can’t any longer. It was strange to me that they chose to have these conversations while investigating a murder and possible terrorist threat, but it seemed as though that brought everything to the surface. The case may have been resolved in the end, but their issues weren’t so I have a feeling we’re going to be hearing about them again.

When I saw that Tony was going to be stranded at the airport with Ellie and Jake, I kind of thought we’d get a more emotional episode with maybe all of them sharing family stories or something like that. Having the action come to them was great, though a part of me still wishes we’d gotten some of those quiet moments, too.

Overall, I did enjoy this episode though. I like it when they change things up and having a snowstorm bury D.C. so that the team has to investigate a crime while half of them are practically trapped at the office and the other half at the airport was interesting.

The only thing that could have made it better was actually seeing Gibbs do that snow angel for Abby.

My favorite bits:

Bishop introducing Jake to Abby as “the amazing Abby.”

The Turks for Turkey Day joke going over like a lead balloon.

Ellie: “The Gibbs Look. Hello! Did you think I was making it up?”

Tony referring to running into Jake as a Thanksgiving miracle.

Jake fooling Tony into thinking that there was a project in the works to make a hologram that could shake hands.

Ellie and Jake discovering that Smelly Guy was sitting next to them on the plane.

The stewardess announcing the delays with a huge smile on her face.

Jake getting Tony’s Chinatown reference.

Tony: “I hate couples.”

Jimmy asking Gibbs the last time he made a good snow angel. I’d actually pay good money to see that.

Tony describing all the people in the airport. Makes me wonder what he’d call me if I was marching through his airport.

Tony: “Let’s show him ours and ask to see his.”
Ellie: “What, guns?”
Tony: “No, badges.”

Tony getting suspicious when “Beers” didn’t get the beer joke. I love that Tony knew the guy would have heard that his whole life.

McGee’s cell still having that old high school photo of Tony.

Jimmy wanting to name his child Beers?? I seriously wanted to smack him.

Of course Gibbs knows about the air marshal.

Abby pointing out that squinting was super cute on Gibbs.

“Anybody else feel like they’re playing Clue?” – Ha! That’s even funnier coming a week after Supernatural aired their own Clue-themed episode.

Ducky’s W.C. Fields’ impression.

Tony trying his charm to clear the crowd. That old lady calling him “pretty boy” was hilarious.

Jimmy deciding that maybe naming his child “Norm” was a bad idea, since he’d have to fight the urge to give the kid a beer. Man, beer is becoming the word of this episode.

“Put a sock in it, Mr. Palmer.” – Laughed. Out. Loud.

Tony taking out the assassin before anyone else could really move. Whoa!

Tony: “Dr. Dapper in the men’s room with the carbon fiber knife.”

Aw, poor Tony. After all that, his dad missed his flight and he never had to be in the airport in the first place.

Everyone agreeing to a celebratory cocktail when Ducky said he was paying.

Abby’s puppy dog eyes when she asked Gibbs for snow angels.

Aw, man!! That is so not fair. Gibbs agreed to a snow angel and we don’t get to see it. I call bogus.
