Red Band Society Season 1 Review “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”

Red Band Society episode 8 Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (2)

Emma’s epiphany about eating on last week’s Red Band Society really rubbed me the wrong way, so thank got that this episode saw the other shoe drop. She can’t just decide to be rid of her anorexia because she doesn’t want her boyfriend to break up with her, and the way her storyline is going addresses this issue.

Though it’s frustrating to watch, I like that the characters on this show actually act their age. Of course Emma puts the cute boy above her own needs, insecure as she is, and of course Leo takes her apparent recovery too far in hopes that they can have a normal relationship. It’s the way that teenagers think and, while Leo was pretty insensitive in this episode, it’s not something I would hold against him.

Kara also acts this way, assuming that Hunter’s sister is actually his girlfriend and taking time to figure out why he would make the decisions he has. Are we supposed to think that Hunter is a few years older? He obviously doesn’t look 17, but even if he is supposed to be high school-age, his backstory reveals the struggles that have made him a more thoughtful person that Kara.

I like that she had to sit back and figure out why he was acting the way he was, and that once she’d come to that realisation that Hunter let his guard down with her. My worry is that Hunter is going to die before the end of the season, which would certainly force Kara to grow up.

The big cliffhanger of last week was Charlie waking up from his coma, but we see in this episode that he still has a way to go before he’s up and about. The specialist doctor was a weird storyline, and unfortunately fits in with the way this show plays fast and loose with medical fact, but I’m increasingly appreciating it when Red Band Society calls Doctor McAndrew out for being an arrogant jerk.

What did you think of the episode? Should Leo have realised that Emma was struggling? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
