Grey’s Anatomy Season 11 Review “Bend and Break”

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 Episode 5 Bend & Break (8)
Admittedly, when I saw the previews for this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, I wasn’t thrilled by the prospect of a Calzona-centric episode. Callie and Arizona are characters who I enjoy most when they’re interacting with just about anyone but each other. Don’t get me wrong, there was a time when I LOVED Calzona as a couple. I’d really like to see Callie in a loving, committed relationship where she is free to be who she is, so I was pleased with how the episode ended. For awhile, it looked like Arizona could be that person for Callie, but the cheating and disagreements were as taxing on me as a viewer as they clearly appeared to be on this fictional couple. I recall feeling the same way for a long time about Meredith and Derek and I was so relieved when the writers stopped putting the couple through the wringer and let them enjoy some happiness.

Much to my relief as a viewer, the episode was not an hour of angst and bickering. Watching Arizona struggle in her new fellowship isn’t the most riveting television, but I’m not going to complain about a storyline that gets Geena Davis back on my television screen. My favorite part of the episode was easily watching Meredith and Callie knocking back shots of tequila and singing the vagina song. Ellen Pompeo and Sara Ramirez were so perfect in those scenes, so I hope that’s not the last we’ve seen of the pair this season.

After repeated therapy sessions and several false starts to their 30-day separation, the couple finally reached a decision about their future. I think the writers intended for Callie’s decision to be a shocking moment, but it wasn’t. As soon as Arizona revealed that she was all in, I suspected that Callie wasn’t. The lack of surprise, however, did not make the scene any less effective. Again, Sara Ramirez nailed it. Callie finally said what many Grey’s Anatomy fans have been saying all along – we want to see the happy, free, dancing in her underwear Callie that seemed to disappear as her relationship with Arizona continued. Of course, last night’s episode will not mean the end of the Callie/Arizona angst. I’m sure that shared custody and a shared work location will lead to some awkwardness. Hopefully the writers will let Arizona focus on her fellowship and Callie focus on rediscovering herself, rather than complicate things with either character getting into another relationship.

Until next week!
