Jane The Virgin Episode 2 Review “Chapter Two” – Time for Selfishness

jane the virgin 102 chapter two 05

In this episode of Jane The Virgin, called “Chapter Two,” Jane tries to get her life back on track, but it turns out to be much harder than she thought.

Having never seen a telenovela, I feel like I’m getting a mini education on them from this show. I’m going to assume that telenovela’s must be full of plot twists and characters that are connected to each other. Because the more I see of this show, the more confused I seem to be.

I swear, I think I’m going to need to start making some sort of spreadsheet or graph or something to help me keep track of who is connected to whom. Don’t get me wrong, having every single character connected to almost every single other character is a little refreshing. On other TV series, you might see one character connected to one or two others, but on this show everyone is connected in some way to everyone else.

Beyond the mind-boggling character connections, this second episode allowed me to get past the overload of information I had received before the premiere. I was able to watch this episode without any preconceived ideas and it was a relief. With a clearer perspective, I was able to observe Jane’s dilemma and I really like the way she is handling all this. I honestly don’t know if I could have kept my sanity as well as she has so far and I don’t blame her one bit for finally having a meltdown when it finally hit her what was happening.

I know they are gearing up to make the relationship between Michael and Jane more complicated as it interweaves with the crumbling relationship of Rafael and Petra. I really like Michael so I hope that they stay together, but Rafael has his plus points as well. I thought it was great that Jane did stand up for herself after Michael told her she needed to quit her job though. She’s absolutely right, she does deserve to be selfish right now – she’s the one carrying the baby after all.

My favorite bits:

Jane’s mother performing “Milkshake.” Brilliant.

Jane referring to the baby as “milkshake.” That’s actually pretty adorable.

The narrator referring to the doctor as “the frickin’ doctor.”

“Hey! Who’s the hottie?”
“Jane! He’s old enough to be your father.”

The reaction all of Jane’s coworkers had when they found out she kissed Rafael.

Jane completely freaking out when she saw all the bad things Rafael had done.

Really, really wanting to know what Rafael did in Bora Bora.

“My father-in-law likes to fish.”
“Does he also like magic?”

A leopard getting loose on a TV set. Oops.

Not blaming Michael at all when he freaked out at the sight of that big belly coming toward him. That kinda freaked me out, too.

Michael mishearing what Rafael said. Ha!

Jane walking in to her appointment and finding a crowd there to meet her. Well, they do say it takes a village. Jane comes ready-made with her own.

Rafael and Jane’s reaction to the baby’s heartbeat. Aw.

Michael threatening to tell Rafael if Petra didn’t end her affair.

Jane finally realizing what had happened to her and that she was carrying a baby and it would be much harder to give up than a milkshake.

Finding out the real reason that Jane’s mom sang the song at her Quinceanera. So sweet.

Michael making his own version of a big, telenovela entrance with his I-screwed-up music. So much aw.

Xiamora’s mother fainting when she saw who her daughter was in bed with.

Wait. Zaz was impaled?? What is happening??
