Supernatural Chat: 6 Things I Miss From Season 3

Hey there, Supernatural fans! How is everyone surviving the hellatus so far? We’re maybe around a third of the way through so it won’t be too much longer until our favorite show is back on the air.

Continuing my special Supernatural Chat series for Hellatus 2014, here is a list of 6 things I miss from Season 3. Don’t forget to check out 15 things I miss from Season 1 and 13 things I miss from Season 2.

Dean’s Deal

In order to bring Sam back from the dead, Dean made a deal with a demon to exchange his soul for Sam. You might be wondering why I miss the prospect of Dean dying, but what I actually miss is what that deal hanging over his head did to him. First, he was Mr. Death Wish – not caring about what he ate and taking crazy chances because, well, he was dead already, right?

Then that changed as Dean became increasingly more and more frightened about what was coming and he started to reflect on who he was. In a dream, he confronted himself and was able to get out all his feelings about his father and the way he had been raised and finally he saw himself as a demon. It’s strange to think that that awful nightmare has now happened to him.

Protective Sam

Dean’s deal didn’t just affect Dean, it also affected Sam as well. Before that, it was almost always about Dean trying to protect Sam, but once the deal was in place, Sam took on the role of Dean’s protector. He really stepped up and did everything he could possibly think of to protect his brother, even going so far as to work with Ruby because he (mistakenly) though she would help.

Though none of Sam’s plans worked – not even his idea to use crazy, old Dr. Benton’s method of using people’s body parts to turn Dean into basically a zombie – it was great to see their roles switched. For a little while there, Sam was like the older brother or dad to Dean, much like Dean had been to him for all those years.

Christmas with the Winchesters

Because Dean was sure it was his last year on earth, he wanted to celebrate one last Christmas with his brother. Sam of course wasn’t too keen on the idea at first, but eventually he got into it. But even before Sam decided to enjoy the holiday for his brother’s sake, there was still a lot of Christmas fun to be had and a part of me always wished that we would have gotten more holiday-themed episodes each season. I can just imagine what kind of holiday myths and traditions the show could turn into stories of horror and, really, what’s not to love about that?

Ruby and Bella

Even as I’m writing this, I swear I can feel the hatred of millions of fans boring straight into my soul. I’m aware that most of the fandom hated these two women with the strength of a thousand suns, but the truth is I never had a problem with them and I actually thought they brought a little extra something to the show in Season 3. Does that mean I wish them to be a part of every season? No. But we’ve had plenty of characters come and go over the years and I think Ruby and Bela are fine additions to the list.

The Seven Deadly Sins

One of the ramifications of the Gates of Hell being opened at the end of Season 2 was the introduction of a whole new kind of demon. Sam, Dean and Bobby had to take on incarnations of the Seven Deadly Sins in an epic battle that left most of the demons either dead or exorcised. They were such a cool group of demons though, that I almost wish they had stuck around to become a part of that season’s Big Bad. They wreaked quite a bit of havoc in just one episode, imagine what they could have done over an entire season.

Wacky Motel Rooms

As much as I love the boys’ new home in the Men of Letters bunker, I do still miss those crazy hotel rooms they used to stay in while working on a case. Each one had its own wild theme and I know I’m not the only fan who has fantasized about doing a road trip across the country just to try and find some strange motels like the ones used on the show. In fact, I’d bet there’s more than a few of you out there who’ve already done it – extra points if you also managed to make the trip in a ’67 Impala.
