Royal Pains Season 6 Premiere 2014 Review “Smoke and Mirrors” – The Family Grows Bigger

Royal Pains Season 6 Episode 1 Smoke and Mirrors (10)

In the Royal Pains Season 6 premiere, called “Smoke and Mirrors,” Hank has to decide what kind of doctor he wants to be and the family grows bigger in more ways than one.

After the events of last season and Hank’s medical emergency drama, I have to admit I was expecting a little bit of excitement from this episode. But I had to remind myself that Royal Pains was originally a light, summer show and it looks like they are mostly getting back to those roots. No one’s life was in danger in this season premiere, but there was plenty of family drama to explore.

First off, I’m not the only one who knows that Emma is Eddie’s daughter, right? I mean I already had a suspicion as soon as she asked Evan about his father and then her conversation with Divya clinched it. No names were given and everything she said was so clearly pointing at Eddie that I almost had to laugh. It made me wonder why they tried to keep it a mystery at the end, but I suppose I could be wrong. I guess it’s possible that she could be Hank’s daughter but she doesn’t look nearly young enough for that.

Speaking of Hank, I was happy that he finally decided to return to his old life. I know he felt like he kind of needed to get out of the Hamptons for a while, but chasing Boris around the world didn’t seem like the kind of getaway he was looking for. I have no idea what Boris is up to but I did see how he was manipulating Hank and I didn’t like that at all. I’ve always enjoyed their friendship but I’ve also felt that it was built on mutual trust. This time I didn’t feel that at all.

Divya’s baby was definitely a highlight and I’m so happy we got to see the day that Sashi was born, with all the comedy and drama of her birth. When the episode began and the baby had already arrived, I felt robbed of some lovely moments and I was glad they were given back to us. Hank missing the baby’s birth was incredibly sad though and just made me madder at Boris.

Finally, Evan and Paige were sweet as always and I was happy to see them in such a good place in their marriage. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll be hearing the pitter-patter of some more baby feet soon.

My favorite bits:

“I have to over-commit to cover my nuts.”
“I think it’s ‘nut.'”

Evan referring to Jeremiah as Divya’s “BFF.”

Baby Sashi. So cute.

“We’re acting out symptoms now?”

Hank arriving to the ceremony in a helicopter. Well, that’s one way to make an entrance.

Evan informing Jeremiah that he was not at all interested in Divya’s cervix.

“You realize you still haven’t given me a welcome-home hug.”
“Let’s talk after that shower.”

Hank discovering that Evan had taken all of their furniture.

“Evan’s an idiot.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, are you looking for a debate?”

Hank promising Divya that he would be there to see her daughter take her first breath. That was beyond sweet.

Divya nearly breaking Evan’s hand to prove that she was not in false labor.

Evan asking for a dance with Sashi. Cuteness overload.

It’s not a Royal Pains party unless someone passes out.

Evan already calling 911 before Hank had even asked. He’s learned a lot in the past few years.

Aha! I had a feeling Emma was Hank and Evan’s sister. Her speech to Divya proved it, even though she never said it.

“Did you get your pelvis fixed or are you just happy to see us?”

Jeremiah demonstrating the stiffest hula hoop technique I’ve ever seen.

My poor heart breaking for Hank when he saw that he’d missed Sashi’s birth and everyone was there but him.

Evan trying to get Hank drunk to get a straight answer out of him.

The boys admitting they missed each other. Aw.
