Episode Synopsis: Growing Up Fisher (NBC) Episode 12 & 13 “Growing Up Fairbanks/Madi About You” – When Joyce’s (Jenna Elfman) free-spirited sister, Madi (guest star Erinn Hayes) comes to visit, Mel (J.K. Simmons) couldn’t be happier since his separation from Joyce means Madi is no longer his problem. But that doesn’t stop Madi from getting in Mel’s head. She suggests that the woman he’s dating, Allison (guest star Constance Zimmer), is burdened with having to take care of her blind boyfriend, so Mel sets out to prove her wrong. Meanwhile, it’s Runyen (Lance Lim) who gets in Henry’s (Eli Baker) head, convincing him that he and Jenny (guest star Isabela Moner) are spending so much time together, they’ve fallen into the dreaded friend zone. Ava Deluca-Verley also stars. Voice-over by Jason Bateman.

When the divorce papers arrive in the mail, Mel (J.K. Simmons) is determined to preserve for Henry (Eli Baker) and Katie (Ava Deluca-Verley) a sense of normalcy, and keeps their annual family trip on the books. When Joyce’s (Jenna Elfman) online date walks out on her, Mel grudgingly invites her along. To their surprise, while on what has previously been a vacation from hell, Mel and Joyce discover that their separation has allowed them to finally appreciate one another – just as they’re ready to sign the divorce papers. Meanwhile, Henry’s crush, Jenny (guest star Isabela Moner), tags along on the vacation, which forces Henry to overcome his fear of horses so he can make the most of this getaway with the girl of his dreams. Lance Lim also stars. Voice-over by Jason Bateman. Matt Glave and Anita Barone also star.

Show Summary: It’s not every family that’s brought closer together by divorce, but then again, the Fishers are anything but typical. Take Mel Fisher (J.K. Simmons, “The Closer,” “Law & Order”), for example. He’s chopping down trees, showing his daughter how to drive, and playing football with his son … except that Mel’s blind. Then there’s Joyce (Jenna Elfman, “Dharma & Greg,” “1600 Penn”), who is your typical teenager — really into fashion, busy with school — but the problem is she’s Mom. That makes it difficult for her actual teenage daughter, Katie (Ava Deluca-Verley, “Southland”), whose advice (and clothes) Joyce is always seeking. At the center of all this is Henry (Eli Baker), the Fisher’s 11-year-old son. Having always been his dad’s eyes and wingman, Henry is less than thrilled when his job is outsourced to Mel’s new guide dog, Elvis. While he is at first reluctant to accept the changes that Elvis brings, adult Henry realizes upon reflection (voiceover by Jason Bateman, “Arrested Development,” “Identity Thief”) that his parent’s split finally allows the Fishers to become one happy (divorced) family.

Based on his life, DJ Nash (“Up All Night,” “Bent”) serves as executive producer, along with Bateman, Jim Garavente (“Identity Thief”) and Tucker Cawley (“Up All Night,” “Everybody Loves Raymond”). “Growing Up Fisher” is a production of Universal Television and Aggregate Films.
