Awkward Season 4 Review “Crowning Moments”

Last week’s Awkward was all about Jenna exploring her adult self, hooking up with a brand new college boy and imagining what her life might be like next year, but this episode, ‘Crowning Moments’, was about all of those hopes and hypothetical dreams clashing with her existing life. That life is filled with immature parents, ex-boyfriend drama and high school pageants and, despite her best efforts, that’s exactly the picture of Jenna’s universe that new boy Luke was treated to.

As much as she has always wanted to be free of the constraints of youth, Jenna has proven time and again that she really isn’t ready to take responsibility for her life. She tried last year with her ‘acting out’ stage and spent the subsequent months clawing back what made her life worth living in the first place but, right now, it seems as though she might finally be ready to strike out on her own. Her reaction to Tamara’s catfishing scheme just proves how over the usual high school shenanigans she is, as does her caring and reasonable response to Matty’s unfortunate outburst.

Weirdly, for the first time maybe ever, Jenna is in a position of power over Matty just by choosing to move on with her life. This could have interesting repercussions when it comes time for college, but right now Matty’s probably seriously regretting his decision to cut Jenna out emotionally. He may have been fine with their casual arrangement when he had everything bottled up inside, but now the cat’s out of the bag and he needs someone close by. But are we still supposed to be rooting for him despite the obvious chemistry Jenna has with Luke? If that last scene was anything to go by, then I’d say definitely.

What did you think of the episode? Should Matty have dragged Jenna into his stand-up outburst? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
