Hart of Dixie Season 3 Review “Second Chance”

Second Chance

Hart of Dixie giveth and Hart of Dixie taketh away. In what could have realistically been the series finale if season four hadn’t been greenlit, the aptly named ‘Second Chance’ was an episode of two halves. The Zoe/Wade half, in which they reestablished themselves as a romantic couple worth rooting for, was really great and felt like vintage HoD for the first time in a long time. The second half, however, involved a retreat of season one in the worst possible way, and has the potential to ruin next year’s bonus season.

Not everyone has the same taste in television couples or characters – what would be the fun in that – but I can’t imagine a single person who prefers the Lavon that has emerged this season. He’s acted out, dumped AnnaBeth because he’s scared of commitment and, now, he’s apparently back in the Lemon/George/Lavon love triangle from earlier in the show. There seems to be no good reason for this to come back up at such a late point and, even though primetime soap operas like this thrive on romantic conflict and perpetual love triangles, this feels like a complete misstep.

So, despite the great work the writers have done with Zoe and Wade in these last few episodes – making their eventual reunion seamless despite a season and a half apart – everything else is still a mess. With show’s like Hart of Dixie, that doesn’t necessarily matter as long as there’s a couple you’re supporting for in the middle of all the pointless shenanigans and, with that at the center of the upcoming season four, maybe we can get back to what made the show so special in the first place. I’m hopeful, which is more than I could have said a few months ago.
